Friends, I wanted to share a firsthand account as to my solemn duty and honor to serve as the Senior Fort Bragg representative at planeside honors to welcome home a fallen Soldier. SGT Carlos E. Gill, 25, of Fayetteville, N.C., died Jan. 26, 2010 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center of an illness. He was evacuated from Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan, Dec. 19, 2009, where he was supporting combat operations. SGT Gill was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.
I received the call to serve on Wednesday night, Feb 3, for the arrival of SGT Carlos Gill at noon on Thursday, Feb. 4. I arrived at Pope AFB Silver Ramp (DV Ramp) at 1100 hours on Feb. 4. The Gill family had already arrived, slightly early. I entered the hanger and made my way to the Passenger Terminal, VIP lounge. I was initially overcome by the number of family members that were present to welcome Carlos home. I introduced myself to Ms. Walker, Carlos mother, who was grieving as only a Mother could. She had spent the entire time at Walter Reed Medical Center with Carlos since his medical evacuation from Afghanistan.
I spent a good deal of the time waiting for the aircraft speaking with Carlos Father, a youthful looking, respectful, retired Army First Sergeant, about my age. I also briefly spoke with Carlos uncles. I asked Mr. Gill to tell me about Carlos. He said that Carlos was a wonderful son that loved the Army and loved his job. Carlos was a Communications Soldier. Mr. Gill said that as a child growing up, Carlos was always fooling around with electronic gadgets. Carlos liked to play all types of percussion instruments, and he was a member of his high school band. He told me that Carlos had a big heart, willing to help anybody at anytime.
We all went out the tarmac, at the edge of the receiving ramp at about noon. The 7 man honor guard was in a formation at the edge of the ramp. The plane arrived at approx. 1205. The weather was very brisk and overcast; the onset of the impending wet weather. It was a small, charted aircraft. It had two jet engines mounted on the rear of the fuselage. The aircraft approached from our rear, left, and we saw it touchdown and continue down the Pope AFB runway. The flight line was quiet. There were about 6 C-130s at the far end of the runway. In my earlier discussions with Mr. Gill and Carlos uncles, I indicated that in late January, the runway was extremely active due to the deployment to respond to the Haiti earthquake.
The Pope AFB Commander and his wife were present, although they did not have a requirement to attend. When I spoke with him, he said that Pope was instituting a Patriot Call. This was a notice that went out to all Air Force Personnel assigned to Pope AFB that a deceased service member was arriving. There were about 40 Pope Airman off to the side in formation.
The aircraft turned around at the far end of the runway and taxied back toward us behind the Follow Me truck. It pulled in front of us, nose pointing to the left. After a quick shutdown, the 2 man crew lowered the side door, set up the ramps and brought the cart for the casket down the ramps. The cart was raised up to the floor of the plane, about 5 feet. SGT Gills flag draped casket was moved onto the cart, and then carefully lowered. At this time the Honor Guard moved forward, in formation and in step. I have to also say that traveling with SGT Gill was a Soldier from his unit that stood off the side. The Honor Guard moved deliberately and respectfully to move the casket to the waiting hearse. The Honor Guard rendered a slow, deliberate salute, as did the rest of us in attendance, as did the crew from the plane. One SGT Gill was placed in the hearse, the family moved forward, and formed a circle, holding hands. Although I could not hear, as I stayed back, it was obvious that the family was lifting Carlos and each other up in prayer. When the family finished, they moved back to the edge of the ramp. The Honor Guard rendered a final salute, as did the rest of us, and the rear door of the hearse was closed. An Air Force Military Police car escorted the hearse, and the family members in vans and cars off of the ramp. We all held our salute until the hearse was off the tarmac, and out of sight. SGT Gills funeral was Feb. 5.
I made it a point to approach the aircraft and speak to the 2 man civilian aircrew. They were returning to Dover AFB, where they would accept and perform the solemn duty of retuning yet another fallen service member home. They were extremely professional, respectful and courteous in performance of all of their duties. I briefly spoke with some reps from Fort Bragg Casualty Affairs and the Pope AFB Commander. I departed Silver Ramp in the cold windy weather. I felt honored and humbled to be given the opportunity to attend this ceremony.

Prayer for Peace
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed
But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.
For those missing in action;
for those who didn’t make it home.
I know you’re in God’s presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.
I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you .

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to our Brother-in-Arms Sgt. Carlos Gill. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Carlos. And to Carlos it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while deployed with the U.S. Army in southwest Asia. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Carlos, you are a brave American Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,341 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Carlos’ family and loved ones.
