Wesley R. Smithman Obituary
SALISBURY - Mr. Wesley Rutherford Smithman Sr., 88, of Salisbury, NC went to be with the Lord on Monday July 9, 2018. Born November 21, 1929 in Fayetteville, NC, he was the son of the late Sarah Elizabeth Creech and Ernest David Smithman. Mr. Smithman was a graduate of Fayetteville High School, winning 2 State Championships as an All-State football player. He then enlisted in the Air Force and served 4 years during the Korean War where he was stationed in Japan. After his military service, Mr. Smithman attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he also played football. Following college, Mr. Smithman was a loyal Rams Club member for 40 years. Mr. Smithman worked and later retired from State Farm insurance as an attorney negotiator for 31 years. He enjoyed coaching Little League and Grey Y football; he loved Carolina football and basketball games. Mr. Smithman took great pride in caring and cooking for his family, often preparing large meals for his family. He was a devoted family man. Mr. Smithman was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury. Preceding him in death is his wife, Caroline Swaim Smithman, July 10, 2015; sisters, Lottie Grimsley, Joyce Taylor, Juanita Cain, Clio Sherrill, Edith Willard, and brother, Reece Smithman. Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Wesley "Booter" Smithman, Jr. (Natalie) of Myrtle Beach, SC, William Ashley Smithman of Salisbury, NC; daughter, Caroline Elizabeth Smithman (Mike Wiseman) of Angier, NC; grandchildren, Marshall Smithman, C.C. Smithman, Spencer Smithman, Isabella Smithman; sister, Patsy Williams; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held from 12-1PM Saturday, July 14 at Summersett Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 1PM at Summersett Memorial Chapel with Rev. Randy Kirby officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in City Memorial Park cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Transitions Life Care, (Angier's Location) 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607. Summersett Funeral Home is serving the Smithman family.
