ATTICA - Virginia May Gates, 96, a former resident of Attica went to live eternally with our Lord on March 28, 2014.
Born Nov. 18, 1917 in Chicago, Ill. to Mary Jane Liebl and Claredon Cunningham, she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Henry Engelskirchen. Mrs. Gates graduated from Lakeview High School and graduated from Bryant Stratton Business College in Chicago, Ill.
Virginia married Harry Gates on Sept. 2, 1939 at the Endeavor Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Ill. and they moved to Attica in 1948. Mr. Gates preceded her in death on Aug. 1, 2002.
Mrs. Gates retired from Avco Financial Services in Attica in 1981. She was a member of the Attica-Williamsport Evangelical Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and was Treasurer for many years. She was an honorary retired member and past President of the Attica Psi Iota Xi Philanthropic Sorority and was also a member of the Monday Afternoon Club, Women's Literary Club, United Presbyterian Women and attended the weekly Presbyterian Women's Bible Study.
Virginia was an avid fan of all sports, but especially her beloved Chicago Cubs and Purdue University. She also enjoyed daily devotionals, crossword puzzles and was an ardent reader. She and her husband enjoyed wintering in Florida after their retirement. She demonstrated the example of Jesus Christ in responsibility, integrity and love to all.
Surviving are three daughters, Carolyn Jean (Kenneth) Kloss, Wheaton, Ill.; Barbara Lee Kerr (with whom she made her home), Lafayette; Patricia J. (Michael) Cassidy, Lafayette; two sons, Richard Harold (Pam) Gates, Attica and William Thomas (Terry) Gates, Louisville, Ky.; a daughter-in-law, Brenda Gates, Attica; fifteen grandchildren, Carla Kloss, Kristin Barrett, Melissa Bill, Mike Gates, Steve Gates, Stephania Cole, Michelle Briles, Staci Gross, Laci Frodge, Rickey Kerr, Rustey Kerr, Rodney Kerr, Brad Gates, Ryan Gates, Lindsay Shultz; 32 great-grandchildren and a great great-granddaughter. Surviving nieces, Georgia Murray, Tualatin, Ore.; Donna Jean (Ron) Singer, Las Vegas, Nev. and JoAnne (Jerry) Sisk, Plymouth, Minn. Virginia was preceded in death by a son James Robert "J.R." Gates, a brother, Robert, her sister, Vivian, a granddaughter, Kelli Jean Horn and two great-grandchildren, Marc Anthony Ward and Evan Tyler Gates.
Services were held at the Attica-Williamsport Evangelical Presbyterian Church on April 2 at with Rev. Daniel Bloesch officiating. Burial followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Wingate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Attica-Williamsport Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
