Birschbach, Nelson Peter
Nelson Peter Birschbach, 87, of Beaver Dam and formerly of Mt. Calvary, passed away at home March 20.
Nelson was born Feb. 15, 1926, to Simon and Rose (Gundert) Birschbach in Mt. Calvary. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Japan late during World War II and in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He married Dolores (Dolly) Ecker on Nov. 10, 1950.
Nelson worked for many years for The Singer Sewing Company, managing stores in Wisconsin and Michigan. He later went into business for himself and ran Nelson's Sewing Center on Front Street in Beaver Dam for 25 years. After retirement Nelson and Dolly serviced sewing machines for many Amish residents throughout central Wisconsin.
Nelson was a member and Past Commander of Juneau Post 15 of the American Legion and a member and Past President of the Juneau Lion's Club. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church/St. Katharine Drexel, volunteered at the Veterans Hospital in Madison for many years and delivered Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed his cats, visits from his children, traveling, playing sheepshead and driving his 1964 Rambler.
Survivors include wife, Dolly; son, Peter (Kathy) of Rochester, N.Y.; son, Mark (Nina) of Waukesha; daughter, Laurie (Don) Sachtleben of Carmel, IN; daughter, Amy (Jerry) Novotny of Minneola, FL; and grandchildren, Matthew and Kelsie Birschbach. Nelson also is survived by brothers, Eugene (Rosie) and James Birschbach, sister, Joan (Jerry) Diederich and sister-in-law, Betty Birschbach.
Nelson was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold and Lester and sisters, Martha, Alice and Germaine.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Koepsell Funeral Home, N7199 N. Crystal Lake Road, Beaver Dam, with Deacon Dennis Petrie and Deacon Ed Cody officiating. A visitation will be held also on Saturday, March 23, from 10:30 to 11 at Koepsell Funeral Home. Military honors will be conducted by Juneau American Legion Post # 15.
The Birschbach family would like to extend special thanks to the Juneau Lions Club and Generations Home Care and Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Dodge County Humane Society, Juneau.
