Mengel, Mary Ann Dorn
Mary Ann Dorn Mengel passed away on Monday evening February 25, 2013, at Lakeshore Manor Nursing Home. Born June 4, 1933 in Mount Calvary, WI to Louise (Schaefer) and Herman Dorn, she was the third of six children, Phyllis Steffes, Ralph Dorn, Gordon Dorn, Peggy Diedrich, and Alan Dorn. Mary Ann graduated from St. Mary's Springs Academy High School, St. Agnes School of Nursing, Marian College, and the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.
She married LeRoy Mengel and together they had five children, Kathleen Mengel Flesch (Michael), Elizabeth Mengel, Jane Mengel, Mark Mengel (LeeAnn), and Matthew Mengel (Terhi). Mary Ann thoroughly enjoyed being a full time mom. She also enjoyed her nine grandchildren Andrew and Daniel Flesch; Lee, Mark Jr., Hank, and Zack Mengel; and Laura, Rosa, and Vera Lindl (Matthew and Terhi).
Mary Ann worked at various nursing positions as her family was growing including one of her favorite positions as a labor and delivery nurse at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac. After receiving her Masters in Nursing she taught at Marian College, Moranie Park Technical College, and Milton College. Her academic interests included sexuality, pain management, and alternative medicine. Mary Ann also served on the State Board of Nursing and spoke often at regional and national nursing conventions.
Mary Ann had many interests, but none surpassed her love of travel. She was eager to travel to all 50 states and the family spent many summers on camping trips to achieve that goal. In addition, Mary Ann and LeRoy also enjoyed international travel; they explored many foreign countries. Mary Ann and LeRoy lived in Pebbles, Fond du Lac, and they finally retired in Oshkosh. A lifelong learner, she was involved in the early planning of the Learning in Retirement Program at UWO. Mary Ann loved the outdoors and spent considerable time walking, gardening, and birding. She was a campground hostess at Peninsula State Park for many years where she was able to combine her love of nature and meeting new people.
Her lifetime friendships with her classmates from grade school through college enriched her life and she was blessed with many great neighbors. She was preceded in death by her children Jane and Mark, her brother Ralph, sister Phyllis, and both parents. She leaves a loving husband, children, and grandchildren who will miss her tremendously.
The family will hold a private memorial service.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Jane Mary Mengel '82 Memorial Fund at the US Air Force Academy Foundation.
