John J. Schmitz, 62, of Fond du Lac, passed away on Monday, January 21, 2013, at St. Agnes Hospital. He was born July 7, 1950, in Fond du Lac, the son of Ambrose "Sam" and Mary Helen Schrage Schmitz. He was a 1969 graduate of New Holstein High School. On September 18, 1971, he married Janice Thompson in Fond du Lac. He was employed by Galloway West, Borden's, Waterford, and Saputo Cheese for 40 years until closing in 2009. John enjoyed his passion of old cars and car shows, and also enjoyed talking to anyone no matter who it was. He always put everyone else first, and was always there to help you out. John also enjoyed camping in the summer with his family and friends. His family was the most important part of his life. He enjoyed reading over and over to his grandkids, spending time in the woods hunting with his boys, going to Brewer games with his family and just relaxing with his family and friends.
Surviving is his wife, Janice, of Fond du Lac; two sons, Bryan (Debbie) Schmitz and Greg (Jennifer Millard) Schmitz, both of Fond du Lac; three grandchildren, Logan, Larissa, and Dorothy Schmitz, all of Fond du Lac. He is further survived by his parents, Ambrose "Sam" and Mary Helen Schmitz of Mt. Calvary; two brothers, Tom (Jan) Schmitz of Mt. Calvary; and Nick (Bonnie) Schmitz of Sheboygan; a sister, Cathy (Troy) Schmitz Couillard of Madison; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Daisy. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey John Schmitz; his maternal and paternal grandparents; his father and mother-in-law, Howard and Coralie Everling Thompson.
Visitation for John J. Schmitz will be on Thursday, January 24, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Uecker-Witt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. at the funeral home on Thursday.
