Daniel Ed.D. Obituary

Dr. Daniel J. Maloney, Ed.D.

Daniel J. Maloney, 57, of St. Paul, Minnesota passed Monday, June 3, 2013 in Fond du Lac, Wis.

Dan was born on Nov. 16, 1955 in New York City to Daniel P. and Mary Walsh Maloney, who preceded him in death. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Dowling College, his Master of Science from Long Island University, and his Ed.D from Boston College. He then went on to a successful career in higher education. A gifted and popular professor, Dan was passionate and devoted to the education of young people. He loved being in the classroom and working with students and staff in the university setting. Education, he believed, was one of the most important ways to empower individuals to lead better lives and in making this world a better place for us all to live. He lectured and wrote often on that subject.

Dan was a Professor of Leadership Studies at Marian University in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin since 2003 where he also served as Provost. He also served at St. Mary's University in St. Paul, Minnesota as the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and professor. Prior to that, Dan served at Immaculata University in the Philadelphia area. Dan remained close to many members of the De La Salle Christian Brothers, a religious community to which Dan belonged for several years after college. In particular, Dan leaves behind his dearest friend, Brother Louis DeTomasis, FSC. Although a serious and hardworking scholar, Dan also knew how to enjoy life. He was personable, outgoing, had a witty sense of humor and wore a smile all the time. He was an avid reader and loved a good debate on almost any topic. His family and friends could always expect him to liven up any gathering with his wry commentary and humor. Family was a big part of Dan's life. Even though he lived halfway across the country, he kept himself deeply involved with all that was going on with his family. He called and visited his brother, Brian, and his sister in law, Helen, regularly just to stay connected. He was close to his nieces and nephew, Kristen, Katherine and Brian, and to his uncle Billy. During his Mom's long illness, Dan managed her affairs to make sure she had the best of care.

Perhaps the best testament to how wonderful and unique he was is to see how many friends he has across so many locations. He was kind, loyal and gave of himself to all of them. They, in turn, gave the same back to him and more.

While we will miss him always, he had a great, albeit, too short life. We will gather in the coming days in New York City to celebrate Dan's wonderful spirit and will do the same in the coming months in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. We take comfort that Dan is surely with God and at peace.

Visitation is at the Edward D. Lynch Funeral Home, 43-07 Queens Blvd., Sunnyside, NY 11104 on Monday, June 10, 2013. Hours are 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 10:15 a.m. at St. Teresa's Roman Catholic Church 50-20-45th St. Woodside, NY 11377. Burial will follow immediately after Mass at Calvary Cemetery, also in Woodside, NY.
