WESTMINSTER -- Elaine A. (Nikki) Waronen, 90, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at the Gardner Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, in Gardner, after a brief illness.

Her husband of 69 years, Allan A. Waronen, died on September 5, 2013.

Elaine leaves two children, Allan E. Waronen, and his wife Linda, and Bette A. Roy, and her husband, Barry, all of Westminster; two grandchildren, Sandra Harrison, and her husband, Jake of Yarmouthport, MA, and Craig Waronen Roy, and his wife, Melissa of Coral Springs, FL; three great-grandchildren, Leahna, Ellia and Cody Roy, all of Coral Springs, FL

She also leaves two nieces, Joyce Palagi, and her husband Jeff of Westminster and Cynthia Kuehn, and her husband James, of Orlando, FL and a nephew Peter Nikki and his wife Cobi, of Westminster

She was predeceased by her brother, Urpo Nikki.

Elaine was born in Fitchburg, on March 16, 1924, a daughter of the late Toivo and Anna Hilja (Jalko) Nikki. She graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1942 and Becker Junior College in 1944. She and Allan were married on December 8, 1943.

Elaine started her 30 plus year career at Burbank Hospital as a secretary to Mr. Bullock, before becoming the manager of the area's State Cancer Registry.She ultimately became the Medical Records Librarian and was the department head until her retirement in 1986.

Elaine was a life-long resident of Westminster, and for many of her adult years she actively participated and managed the family blueberry business. She loved to share stories of her childhood and growing up on a farm. Elaine's appreciation of the outdoors and animals was always evident, as she enjoyed gardening and never passed up an opportunity to help take care of cats, dogs and even llamas. She truly enjoyed a simple lifestyle, and was always a farm girl at heart. She was extremely proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was an avid fan of their accomplishments.

Elaine's family extends a special thanks to Linda for her care.

She will be greatly missed by her loving family and all her knew her.

WARONEN -- A Graveside Service will be held on Monday, July 14, 2014 at 10:00 am, at the Woodside Cemetery, 9 Narrows Road, Westminster, MA 01473. Rev. Mary Ann Barry will celebrate. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Elaine's name to the Westminster Historical Society, PO Box 177, Westminster, MA 01473.
