FITCHBURG -- Ellen Kaarina (Koittila) Rahnasto died Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Oakdale Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center in West Boylston.

She was born in Fitchburg to Aleksanteri and Katri (Wahlroos) Koittila and graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1937. A long-time resident of Fitchburg, she worked as a bookkeeper for Marvo Oil and Rome's Clothing Store prior to her marriage in 1950 to Lauri Rahnasto.

She became a full-time homemaker and raised three children, Karen, Nancy and Lauri Jr. In 1967 she and her husband acquired Patari Oil Company and operated the business until 1980. Ellen was an accomplished artist. Her oil paintings of landscapes and still life subjects were regularly included in the local artist exhibition at the Fitchburg Art Museum and the Finnish-American Club of Saima. She was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church and served as its treasurer and on its finance committee for many years. She also was a member of the Friends of the Fitchburg Public Library.

She will be sorely missed by her children Karen Rahnasto Kay and spouse Barry C. Kay, Nancy Rahnasto Osborne and spouse Alfred E. Osborne, and Lauri E. Rahnasto, Jr. and spouse Linda Rahnasto, and her three grandchildren Alexander Osborne, Kirsten Rahnasto and Eric Rahnasto. She was predeceased by her husband Lauri E. Rahnasto, Sr. in 2002, and her brother Uuno Koittila in 1984.

RAHNASTO -- Calling hours for Ellen will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 28 at the Bosk Funeral Home, 85 Blossom St., Fitchburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 29 at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 1200 John Fitch Highway, Fitchburg, followed by burial at Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg.
