Gerald Wayne Chester

FARRELL, PA -- Gerald Wayne "Steppy" "Papa Bear" Chester, died on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012 at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was 73.
Gerry was born Nov. 15, 1939, in Leominster, MA, to George N. and Dorothy Dupee Chester.
As a 1958 alumnus of Notre Dame High School, Fitchburg, he excelled in athletics. Fondly called Champ and MVP, he led his school to win championships in football, basketball and track. Following graduation, he pursued boxing.
Gerry moved to Farrell, PA in December 1966, where he was employed as an insurance man. He retired as a supervisor from the former Howell Industries in Masury, where he worked for 24 years.
A true sports fan, he coached Little League baseball and girls and ladies softball.
Gerry was a faithful member in good standing of New and Living Way Apostolic Church of Jesus Christ, Farrell, where he served as president over various organizations until his health failed.
He was formerly married to Dorothy Newby Chester.
Gerry will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 23 years, Elder Kathy Stewart S. Chester, at home; a daughter, Meredith "Janine" Henry and her husband, Mark Henry Sr.; and twin sons, Kelvin W. Chester Sr.; and Kurt W. Chester and his fiancée, Debra Marks, all of Sharon, PA; stepsons, Luis Newby, also of Sharon, PA; Paul C. Muhammad and his wife, Demetria, of Farrell, PA; Jarrett D. Samuels Sr. and his wife, Tracey, of Farrell, PA; a stepdaughter, Dr. Lucretia K. Samuels, Richmond, VA; Kiara M. Chester, Farrell, PA; two foster daughters, whom he reared, Shonteace and Johnna Saylor, four godsons; 23 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He also leaves two sisters, Joanne A. Teixiera of Leominster and Jackie Chester of Pepperell; four brothers, Richard A. Chester, Leominster, MA; David A. Chester and his wife, Marie; and Robert C. Chester, all of Leominster; and Peter R. Chester, Wallingford, CT; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
Gerry was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Chester Jones; and a brother, George N. Chester.
Funeral services were held in PA. Arrangements were handled by WILBERT L. SHANNON FUNERAL HOME Ltd., 33 Broadway Ave., Wheatland, PA.
