HANFORD, CALIFORNIA -- Gerard (Gerry) Arthur Hinds, 58 died on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, in Hanford, California. Born September 27, 1955. In 1994, Gerry retired as a Chief Petty Officer, having served 21 years in the US Navy
Gerry leaves his mother, Mary M. Hinds of Florida; siblings Donna Hébert of Amherst, MA, the Reverend James E. Hinds of Gardner, MA, and Mary Lou James of Florida; former wife, Kathleen Hinds (Claunch); sons Jonathan and Jason; daughter-in-law Emily; grandchildren Christopher, Madelynne and Robert; and niece Molly Hébert Wilson. His father, Rodger E. Hinds, died in 2008.
Born in Waterbury, CT, Gerry grew up in Naugatuck, CT and Leominster, MA. After enlisting in the Navy, Gerry first served as a construction electrician with two distinctive tours in a Naval Construction Mobile Battalion. Called SeaBees, these highly talented sailors handle large-scale construction and retrofits. In the mid-70s, Gerry worked on the installation of a new international research station at the South Pole (Operation Deepfreeze), and with re-building the US Naval air station on Bermuda (now L.F. Wade International Airport). He then transitioned to aviation electronics, where he was assigned to various air-wings and served on a number of aircraft carriers. He also had two tours as a Navy recruiter, and was a skilled instructor within the Navy's Total Quality Management program. Gerry's military service followed a long family tradition that included his paternal great-great-grandfather (Civil War), both grandfathers (WWI), both parents (WWII), and his older sister (Vietnam era).
After retiring from the Navy, Gerry applied his knowledge of electronics and computers in his civilian jobs, serving as information technology coordinator and instructor at various schools in Lemoore, and as an electronics instructor in the California Department of Prisons.
