Grace A. Grier; 90

FITCHBURG -- Grace Ann (Vitunskas) Grier, 90, most recently of Southington, CT, passed away peacefully on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, of complications from lung cancer.

This loving wife and mother, and most of all the embodiment of a kind and gentle soul, was born in Worcester, MA on August 29, 1923, the youngest daughter of immigrants Vincent and Lena (Lukasavitch) Vitunskas from Lithuania. Grace or

"Gi Gi" as she would often like to be called, grew up in Worcester with her older brother, George and sister, Helen, and graduated from Commerce High School in 1941.

She then worked at various jobs including the Singer Sewing Machine Co. before marrying Frank Grier, her loving husband of 58 years until his passing in 2004. Along the way, she gave birth to their only child, James in 1950 while living in Fitchburg, Mass. Never content with just one, she fulfilled her passionate love for children by providing a loving home to numerous foster children who owe her immeasurably for their passage to better lives. Her other passion was that for all animals, especially dogs, and notably her border collie, Queenie and German Shepard, Rex.

After relocating to Southington in 2006, Grace rekindled her desire to be with kids through volunteer work at a local daycare center. They will undoubtedly miss her connection to them as will many others whom she touched with her warm, kind and thoughtful ways.

Grace leaves behind her forever grateful son, James Grier of South Glastonbury; as well as several nephews, nieces and cousins in Central Mass. and on Cape Cod.

Her son wishes to give well deserved recognition to the staff and residents at The Orchards at Southington, where she lived for many years, to Jane and Chester the therapy dog for their loyal companionship, to all the staff at Southington Care Center for doing what they do so well, and lastly to the VNA Healthcare Hospice staff, and especially her aide Mindy, who is living proof that angels do exist.

GRIER -- Funeral and burial services will be held privately for immediate family only at the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli and Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral home, 243 Water St., Fitchburg.
