COON RAPIDS, IOWA -- Harold Dean Wailes, 77, of Coon Rapids, Iowa, died August 7, 2013, at 4:15 AM, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family awaiting his heavenly journey, meeting his long awaiting loved ones.
Born in Panora, Iowa on October 8, 1935, he was the son of George and Margaret (Dargan) Wailes. Dean grew up in Iowa, and moved to Massachusetts in 1955 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Dean served in the Korean War
, and was a cook stationed at Fort Devens when he met and married Jean Elizabeth Pearson on September 14, 1957. He received his high school diploma while serving in the Army.
Dean enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hiking and fishing, especially for Hornpout in Otter River State Forest, Massachusetts, at night with a lantern and a can of worms. Many an evening was spent by the campfire in the woods, that he loved so much, passing on his love of nature, the four seasons and New England to his children. Dean also enjoyed indoor hobbies such as playing cards, cribbage and pool, and was an officer at the British American Club in Fitchburg, MA, while spending time with loyal friends. He was an avid coin collector, always in search of the elusive treasure.
Dean is survived by, two sons, John C. Wailes and his wife, Heather of Otter River, and Michael S. Wailes; and one daughter, Sandra A. Leger and her husband, Timothy, of Fitchburg; two grandsons Joshua and Mathew Leger; two granddaughters, Candice and Rachelle Wailes; one brother, Dennis Wailes and his wife, Leahanna; four sisters, Beverly Lorenzen and her husband, Michael, Clara Johnson and her husband, Marvin, Shirley Imler and her husband, Dean, and Kathryn Hunter and her husband, Richard, all of Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his father, and a son, Dean G. Wailes.
WAILES -- In keeping with his wishes, there will be no public services at this time. If desired, memorial contributions in his honor may be made to the Coon Rapids Ambulance.
