of Leominster, served in the Navy WAVES; 90

LEOMINSTER -- Patricia L. (Counihan) Biery, 90, of Leominster, died Thursday, April 10 in her home, after a short illness.

She was born on Oct. 15, 1923, in Leominster, MA, the daughter of the late Patrick and Katherine (Connaughton) Counihan. She graduated in 1941 from St. Bernard's High School, Fitchburg.

Following graduation, she worked as a telephone operator for the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company in Lunenburg before joining the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), serving from 1944-1946. In 1946, she married Francis W. Biery, and together they raised a family of five. She began work as a telephone operator for Sears and Roebuck in Leominster in 1967 and continued working for Sears until her retirement in 2008.

Mrs. Biery was a devoted parishioner of St. Leo's Parish in Leominster and an avid Red Sox fan. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, knitting, cooking, and reading. Even at age 90, she was a woman of great energy and spirit, always surrounded by family and friends.

Mrs. Biery was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Francis W. Biery, in 2002. She leaves one son, John Biery, and his wife, Jeanette, of Lunenburg, and four daughters, Barbara Biery of Fitchburg, Elizabeth Biery of Leominster, Kathleen Schuman and her husband, Ronald, of Colorado, and Ann Biery of Leominster. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.

In addition to her immediate family, she leaves behind many other family and friends. She was also predeceased by a brother, John Counihan.

BIERY -- The funeral will be held from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg on Monday, April 14, with a Mass in Saint Leo's Church, 108 Main St., Leominster, at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in the Parish Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, April 13, from 2-6 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Leo's Capital Improvement Fund, 108 Main St., Leominster, MA 01453.
