BELFAST, MAINE -- Percy O. Daley, Jr., 89, died surrounded by his family at Concord Health Center, Concord, MA on Saturday. Percy was born in Poughkeepsie, NY and was graduated from Philips Exeter Academy. He served in WWII
in the Army's Tenth Armored Division in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge. Upon his discharge he earned a Bachelor of Music from Harvard University
and a Masters from Boston University. He worked for the Social Security Administration as a claims representative until his retirement. In addition, for thirty years he served in both regional and national leadership positions in the American Federation of Government Employees.
He was a tireless volunteer in community organizations. He and his former wife Edith R. Griscom raised their family in Westford, MA where he served as a CYO softball coach and longtime merit badge counselor for the local Boy Scout council. He was elected to the Westford School Committee and appointed to the planning committee for the development of Nashoba Valley Technical High School, later serving as the school's Westford Representative on that school committee. After his retirement, he moved to Belfast, ME and began the city's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration. He worked on Belfast's First Night event regularly. Once a week for over twenty years he called Bingo at Tall Pines in Belfast and volunteered weekly at the Belfast Soup Kitchen. In addition to these community activities, he was a committed Democrat who was politically active for decades and served as the Chairman of the Waldo County Democratic Committee. He was a member of St. Brendan the Navigator Parish and sang in the choir for many years. He was an active member of Amnesty International and a member of numerous musical and other organizations. He enjoyed traveling and was a fixture in the Belfast community accompanied by his dog.
Percy leaves four sons: Christopher W. Daley of Westford, MA; Timothy O. Daley (Alexandra) of Chelmsford, MA; Peter J. Daley of Clinton, MA; and Kevin F. A. Daley of West Paris, ME. He leaves three daughters: Edith S. Daley of Haverhill, MA; The Rev. Mary F. Bettencourt (Blair) of MA; Rev. Julia K. Daley of Atholl, MA, and his former daughter-in-law Marie Woodman Daley. Besides his children, he leaves eight grandchildren: Amy Bettencourt, Jessica Bettencourt, Alexander Daley, Benjamin Daley, Kathleen Daley, Sarah Daley, Joseph Daley, Katrina Daley. In addition, he leaves many cousins.
DALEY -- PERCY O. JR. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 pm at the BLAKE FUNERAL HOME, 24 Worthen St., CHELMSFORD. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 o'clock at St. Mary Parish, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford. Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Chelmsford.
