Rauni D. Honkala
lifelong resident of Ashby; 88
ASHBY -- Rauni D. Honkala, 88, of Ashby, died Tuesday evening, May 13, 2014, at his home after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Honkala was born in Ashby, December 1, 1925, a son of Matti and Mary (Toivanen) Honkala and was a lifelong Ashby resident, graduating from Ashby High School in 1943. He obtained an associate degree in architecture from ICS School. He served his country as a platoon sergeant in the US Infantry in the South Pacific in WWII
He was a past president of Messiah Lutheran Church in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Boy Scout Committee for many years in Ashby. He served fourteen years on Ashby and North Middlesex Regional High School Committee. He was also on the Hawthorn Brook Planning Board in Townsend, Massachusetts. Rauni was on the Planning Board which developed Montachusett Vocational Technical High School in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He is a member of the American Legion of Ashby. He is a life member and past commander of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post of Ashby. Rauni was an avid hunter and fisherman belonging to the Fitchburg Sportsman Club and the Fitchburg Rod and Gun Club. For over 40 years, Mr. Honkala owned and operated Honkala Construction Company, retiring in 1990.
He leaves his wife of 64 years, Theresa M. (Kiley) Honkala; two sons, Keith P. Honkala and wife Teresa, of Ashby, Kris A. Honkala of Newburyport, Massachusetts; four daughters, Debra M. Honkala and companion, Michael Roberts, and Diane T. Carson and husband, Kurt, both of Townsend, Dale A. Helle of Rutland, Donna J. Childs and husband Jeff, of Ashby; a brother, Edwin Honkala of Ashby; a sister, Helmi Linnus of Ashby and eleven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his loving son, Kevin P. Honkala in 1980. He was the brother of the late Leo Honkala, Ellie Gove, Elsie Piispanen all of Ashby, Donald Honkala of South Carolina, Railei Aho and Edith Somero both of New Ipswich, NH.
HONKALA -- A funeral service will be held 2 PM Saturday, May 17th at the Messiah Lutheran Church, Rindge Road, Fitchburg. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Ashby.
