TOWNSEND -- Robert E. Hirsch, 94, formerly of Townsend, died Friday, February 7, 2014, at Keystone Center, Leominster.
Mr. Hirsch was born in Fitchburg, November 9, 1919, a son of Adolphus G. and Esther (Haase) Hirsch and resided in Townsend for over forty years. He grew up in Lunenburg and was a member of the class of 1939 at Lunenburg High School.
During WW II Mr. Hirsch served his country as a tank driver in the United States Army. He attained the rank of Technician 5th Grade. He participated the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded three bronze stars
Since 1951 Mr. Hirsch owned and operated Hirsch Lumber in Townsend, working almost until the time of his passing.
He leaves his wife of 71 years, Dorothy C. (Brown) Hirsch; his son and daughter-in-law, James R. and Marla (Marant) Hirsch of Lunenburg; two brothers, Alfred Hirsch and Paul Hirsch both of Lunenburg; two sisters, Lucy Hanson of North Carolina and Lillian Grant of Oregon; four grandchildren, David, Michael, Stephen and Kristen; and two great-grandchildren, Finley and Grayson.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Mildred E. Fellon of Lunenburg and Doris Barker of Florida.
HIRSCH -- Funeral services will be held 11 am Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 250 Main Street, ( Rte 119) Townsend Center. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Townsend.
Mr. Hirsch's family will receive family and friends on Saturday from 9 am until the time of the service.
