Retired Leominster Police Officer, Vet; 85

LEOMINSTER -- Roland Joseph LaPointe, Sr., 85 years old, of Leominster, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014, in the LifeCare Center of Leominster, after an illness.

He is survived by his wife, Cora (Gionet) LaPointe; two sons, Patrick LaPointe and his wife, Susan, Roland LaPointe, Jr. and his wife, Pamela with whom he lived; two daughters, Sandra Culley and her husband, Michael, Michelle Napoli and her husband, Jeff; a brother, Bernard LaPointe; three sisters, Teresa Gionet, Rita Ward, and Jeannine Babb;

12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and 37 nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Robert LaPointe, Emile LaPointe and his sister Lucille Cook.

Roland was born February 27, 1929 in Leominster, son of Prudent and Edna (Boisvert) LaPointe, and was a lifelong resident. He attended St. Cecilia's Grammar School and Leominster Saxton Trade. Roland was a World War II U.S. Navy Veteran, serving on the USS Wyoming and the USS Wilson.

He owned and operated the L&L Spa on Mechanic Street in Leominster, before joining the Leominster Police Department in 1964 retiring in 1984. He was a charter member of the Eastwood Club in Fitchburg and was one of a group who started The Leominster Police Association in the late 1960's.

Roland enjoyed volunteering at the Leominster Library, woodworking and cabinet making. He also loved to fish in New Hampshire with his friends and brothers-in-law.

Roland's family would like to thank the nurses and staff on main wing at the LifeCare Center of Leominster for all the compassionate care given to their father.

LaPOINTE -- Roland's funeral will be held on Monday, July 7, 2014 from the Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West Street, Leominster with a mass at 10 am in St. Cecilia's Church, 180 Mechanic Street, Leominster. Calling hours are Sunday, July 6, 2014 from 2 - 4 pm in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Doyle Field Foundation, Inc., c/o John Lastella, 200 Mount Laurel Circle, Shirley, MA 01464.
