Timothy W. Richards

Prominent and beloved community member of North Central Mass.

LUNENBURG -- Timothy Walter Richards of Lunenburg, 69, died Tuesday, January 4, 2011.

Born in Greenwich, Connecticut on August 14, 1941, to the late Walter and Glenora Richards, Tim received his undergraduate and Master's Degree from Cornell University, School of Engineering in Ithaca NY in 1965. There he was a recipient of both the Hamilton Watch and Cornell Engineer Awards for best combination of Athletics, Academics and Activities.

Tim was founder and owner of Orchard Hills Athletic Club for nearly 40 years, founder and director of the International Health and Racquet Sports Association, and founder of the North Central Mass Boys & Girls Club that reaches out to over 400 youngsters in the communities of Leominster and Fitchburg. He was also former trustee of the Community Foundation of North Central Mass and Fitchburg Art Museums and former Director of North Central Mass Chamber of Commerce and former Director of the Fay Club in Fitchburg.

Tim has been the recipient of the Philanthropist of Distinction Award by the Association of Fund Raising Professionals on North Central Mass, and received the President's Award from Fitchburg State College and the Service Above Self Award from Mount Wachusett Community College. Most recently, he received the Nashua Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America Distinguished Citizen Award for 2007 and the Ginny's Guardian Angel Award for 2010.

Tim was very passionate about astronomy, hiking, tennis, and running marathons. He ran his first of seventeen marathons at age 57, and at age 60 he successfully hiked to the summit of Mt. Whitney in the Sierra Nevada's. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and attention to detail.

Tim leaves his wife, Sheila (Webb) Richards; his former wife, Sarah (von der Heyde) Richards of Waltham; his children, Jennifer Connor of Chelmsford, Ken Richards of Brighton, Camilla Velazquez of Chelmsford, and Andrew Richards of Weymouth; six grandchildren, Ryan, Mackenzie and Colin Connor, Alexa and Samuel Velazquez, and Isaac Richards; two nephews, Alex and Ben Richards.

He was predeceased by his brother, Henry Richards.

RICHARDS -- The funeral will be held in Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd, Fitchburg, on Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at 12:30 P.M. Calling hours will be from 4:00-8:00 P.M. on Monday, January 10, 2011 in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made in Timothy's Name to the Boys and Girls Club of North Central Massachusetts, 365 Lindell Ave, Leominster, MA 01453 or to the Christopher J.
