FITCHBURG -- Vincenzo "James" Carnivale of Fitchburg, MA. passed away Monday in Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, Bedford, MA. after a long illness with Alzheimers Disease. He was 91 years old.

He was born in Fitchburg, MA. on May 24, 1922 the son of Giorgio and Julia (Cante) Carnivale and lived in Fitchburg all of his life. He attended and graduated from Fitchburg High School Class of 1940. He then enlisted in the U S. Army in 1941 and served during WWII. He was in the 46th Armored Infantry and fought in the battles of Northern France, Normandy and the Rhinland. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in Germany in 1944 and was also awarded a Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in 1945.

Jim worked as Head custodian for over thirty years at B. F. Brown and Crocker Schools in Fitchburg, MA., and retired in 1984. He was a life member of the Joseph P. Keating Council #99 Knights of Columbus, Fitchburg, a member of the D.A.V. Chapter 30 of Leominster, MA. and a life member of St. Francis of Assisi Church. He enjoyed square dancing, playing cards at the Card club of St. Francis of Assisi Church, gardening, bowling, horseshoes, golfing, and woodworking.

He is survived by his two children, his son James J. Carnivale and wife Karen of Lunenburg, MA., his daughter Sandra Felhazy of Barre, Vermont, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his wife Clarisse (Gagne) Carnivale in 2010, his brother Dominic, and sisters, Mary Allen, Louise Weith, Janet Ritcher and Ida Surro and his granddaughter, Abbey Felhazy.

CARNIVALE -- His funeral Mass will be held on Saturday February 1, 2014 at 10a.m. in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 81 Sheridan St., Fitchburg. Interment with Military Honors will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery. A visitation period will be held on Saturday morning at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 9:30a.m. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to: Wounded Warriors Project, National Processing Center P.O.
