FITCHBURG -- Walter "Gil" Gilbert, 78, died Saturday, October 6, 2012 at his home, after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 34 years, Pauline Ann (Halloran) Gilbert; nine children, Gary Gilbert of Shirley, Donna Bennett of Pittsfield, ME, Lynn Alix of Greenville, NH, Vicky King, Mark Gilbert both of Burnham, ME, May Ann Neal of Leominster, Jacqueline Leger of Winston-Salem, NC, Kevin Bernard of Lunenburg, Lisa Plourde of Leominster; many grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters; and many nieces and nephews, and a very close friend, Frannie.
He is predeceased by three brothers and three sisters.
Gil was born in Hornell, New York on November 22, 1933, a son of the late Henry and Mary (Crosby) Gilbert. He graduated from Elmira High School.
He served in the US Army
during the Korean War
, he was stationed in Okinawa from 1952 to 1957 with the 97th AAA Group, 65th Battalion, and he was constantly around 120 mm artillery pieces. He also served as a radio operator, where he experienced high frequency hearing loss.
Gil worked for 40 years as a machine tender for the Hollingsworth and Vose Company in Groton, MA.
He loved to sing, he was a member of several Barber Shop quartet's, and sang with many groups in the New England Area. He was a woodworking craftsman.
He was a Friend of Bill W., and helped many people through their recovery.
GILBERT -- Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli and the Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 243 Water St., Fitchburg, MA 01420. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen St., Winchendon, MA 01475. Calling hours will be on Sunday, October 14, 2012 from 2:00 -- 5:00 p.m. in the Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions can be made to A.A. World Services, Inc., P.O.
