World War II Veteran

FITCHBURG -- Paul V. Deneen Jr., 89, a lifelong resident of Fitchburg, died February 2nd at the Life Care Center of Leominster. He was 89.

Paul was born January 22, 1924 in Fitchburg, son of the late Paul V. and Harriett (Daley) Deneen Sr. He was predeceased in 2001 by his wife of 50 years JoAnne (Desmond) Deneen, and by his younger brother James Deneen in 2011.

Paul was a 1941 graduate of St. Bernard's Central Catholic High School in Fitchburg. He attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, withdrawing in 1943 to enlist in the US Army Air Corps.

A veteran of World War II, Paul was a 1st Lieutenant and Bombardier with the 487th Bomb Squadron (M), 340th Bomb Group-57th Bomb Wing. He served from August of 1943 until his honorable discharge in February of 1946. As a member of the 487th he was based in Corsica and flew missions on the B-25. He was involved in battles over Southern France, the North Apennines, Rome-Arno, Naples-Foggia and the Balkans. As a result of his service Lt. Deneen was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation, WWII Victory Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with 5 Battle Stars, and Air Medal with 7 Oak Leaf Clusters.

After his service in World War II, Paul returned to Fitchburg and for 40 years worked as a supervisor and production manager for Crocker-Burbank, Weyerhaeuser, and the James River Paper Company. He retired from James River in 1986.

Paul was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by two sons, Stephen Deneen, and his wife, Jocelyn, of Hubbardston, and John Deneen of Alpharetta, Georgia; one daughter, Karen Deneen of Gardner; two grandchildren, Graham and Lydia Deneen of Hubbardston; four nephews, James, John, and Jeff Hammond and Daniel Deneen; two nieces, Joanne Bradley and Judith Moodie, and several grand nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff of the Life Care Center of Leominster.

DENEEN -- Funeral Services for Paul, will be celebrated on Thursday, Feb. 7, from the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli and Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., Fitchburg, with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of the Lake Church, 1400 Main St., Leominster.

Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Fitchburg.

Calling hours are Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 4 to 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Activities Department at the Life Care Center of Leominster, 370 West Street, Leominster, MA 01453 or may be left at the Funeral Home.
