Ann E. Masse -- was speech writer for President Eisenhower -- ASHBY -- Ann E. Masse, 85, of Ashby, died Wednesday, July 3, 2013, at her home surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Masse was born on June 24, 1928 in Boston, the daughter of the late Dr. Burnham S. Walker and Elisabeth W. (French), and resided in Cambridge prior to moving to Ashby 40 years ago.She attended Cambridge Ringe and Latin graduating in 1945 and went on to receive her Bachelor's from Vassar College in 1948. She also attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in Boston. She earned her teacher's certificate from Fitchburg State University and received her Masters in English from Middlebury College in 1975. Mrs. Masse was an avid reader and was very close to her family. She was a member of the Twin City Baptist church and was a faithful parishioner. She had a deep affection for animals and truly enjoyed her time spent at the Fitchburg Senior Center, especially at her bridge club. Throughout her life she held various jobs, most notably as a speech writer for President Eisenhower from 1952-1954. She went on to become an editor of Businessweek Magazine. For over 19 years, Ann taught at Fitchburg High School, holding positions as a Department Head, English Teacher, and Curriculum Coordinator. Afterwards, she taught several years at Twin City Baptist Temple School. She is survived by one son, David C. Masse of Ashby; two daughters, Leslie A. Masse of Ashby, and Susan E. Nickerson and her husband, Stephen C. of Westminster; three grandchildren, Matthew Harris, Christopher Woodyatt, and Jospeh Masse. MASSE -- Funeral Services are to be held on Tuesday, July 9, at Noon at the Twin City Baptist Church, 194 Electric Ave., Lunenburg. Burial will take place privately at Glenwood Cemetery, Ashby.
