Charlotte Jeltsch
Westford, MA teacher, active at Lunenburg church; 93
SPOKANE, WA -- Charlotte Jeltsch passed away peacefully Dec. 28, 2016, after 93 years of life.
She was born in Pasadena, CA on May 22, 1923; the only child of Charles S. and Nancy (McNeill) Biernatzki. She grew up in the Chicago area then went on to DePauw University in Greencastle, IN where she earned her BA in Psychology in 1946. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, and maintained friendships with many of her Theta sisters through a "round robin" newsletter that she edited for many years. On New Year's Eve 1945, she had a blind date with a handsome "new kid in town" Arnold Jeltsch, and they were married 10 months later in Cincinnati, OH. She partnered with Arnold as he developed his career and they raised their three children through sojourns in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia before landing in Massachusetts.
In 1966, she went back to school at Northeastern University for a Masters degree and teaching certificate. She taught elementary school in Westford, MA, mostly molding the young minds of the first graders, until her retirement in 1985. She relished telling the story of finally being "promoted" to second grade after 14 years of teaching. After retirement, she became active in the Women's Club in Lunenburg, MA and the United Parish (UCC) also in Lunenburg. In 2008, she and Arnold moved to Spokane where they lived at Fairwood Retirement Community where she made a whole new set of friends.
Charlotte was preceded in death by Arnold, her husband of 62 years in 2009. She is survived by her three children: Richard Jeltsch (Marsha) of Spokane, Nancy Yamada (Kyohei) of Tokyo, Japan, and Robert Jeltsch (Luz) of Boston, MA; two grandchildren: Susan Jeltsch of Vancouver, WA, and Thomas Jeltsch of Seattle; and five step grandchildren.
A celebration of Charlotte's life was held on Wednesday , Jan. 4th at 1:00 pm at Fairwood Retirement Community, 312 W. Hastings Rd., Spokane, WA.
