BUCKLAND -- Gail Doris Steinbring, 53, of Buckland, Massachusetts (formerly of Fitchburg) died Friday, July 16th after being cared for at home by family, friends, colleagues and staff of Hospice of Franklin County.

Gail was born on December 28th, 1956 at Cutler Army Hospital at Fort Devens, in Ayer and Shirley, Massachusetts, the daughter of Lloyd Steinbring and Evelyn (Marien) Steinbring, both pre-deceased. She graduated from Fitchburg High School and attended Mount Holyoke College, graduating cum laude with a B.A. in American Studies. She also attended graduate school at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst gaining a masters degree in education and certification as a high school teacher. Gail consistently participated in academic professional development programs related to her love of history.

In addition to her childhood hometown of Fitchburg, Gail resided in Dover NH and South Portland ME before settling with her husband Dale and son Patrick in Shelburne Falls MA, in order to attend college and develop her profession.

Gail taught history at Greenfield High School since 1996 after working as a teacher aide and completing her teaching practicum at Mohawk Trail Regional High School under the guidance of Jerry Hoyt and Kenneth Kippenberger. Prior to returning to school to major in American Studies and gain her teaching certification, Gail worked for many years as a family planning and reproductive health counselor. Through this work and her teaching she devoted her life to the welfare and education of women and youth. Gail also worked for Fitchburg Mutual Insurance Company in the mid-70's.

Gail served for many years on the Board of the Highland Village Elderly Housing in Shelburne Falls, and on the Greenfield Education Association negotiating committee as an active union member. She also participated in numerous curriculum and accreditation self-study committees during her tenure at Greenfield High School. Gail received the 2010 Pioneer Valley Excellence in Teaching Award.

Gail loved her home, history, genealogy, reading, her students, the Red Sox, thunderstorms, the Fall season, the New England region, French Canadian comfort food, and traveling. Most of all, she enjoyed engaging in witty exchanges with everyone she met. She spent much of her life fighting social and political injustice.

Gail is survived by her husband Dale MacLeod, her son Patrick MacLeod a graduate student at The New School in New York City, brother Lloyd Steinbring Jr. and wife Linda of Auckland, New Zealand, sister Virginia Guertin of Fitchburg, brother Michael and wife Lisa of Phoenix AZ, brother David Steinbring of Fitchburg, nephews Terry Michaels, Matthew Steinbring and Craig Steinbring of Auckland, New Zealand, Jeremy and Justin Steinbring of Phoenix AZ, nieces Sarah Stewart of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, and Alexa Steinbring of Winchendon, several cousins and her devoted and loving cat Oscar. She will also be sorely missed by her Minnesota Steinbring family, her Canadien Marien cousins, her Michigan in-laws and by her close friends/"sistas" Randee Laikind and Linda Rollins, the patio crew, her colleagues and students over the years, and all those who visited and assisted her in the last weeks of her beautiful life.

Gail was preceded in death by her mother Evelyn (Marien) Steinbring, father Lloyd Steinbring, and brother Scott Steinbring.

At Gail's request, she will be cremated at Eternal Blessings Cremation Service in Guilford, Vermont. The family wishes to thank Dr. Julia T. Donovan and her staff at the Baystate Health D'Amour Cancer Center, and especially the caregivers at Bay State Medical Center Wesson 3 for the care they provided during the difficult course of Gail's struggle with ovarian cancer. We also greatly appreciate the assistance of the staff of Hospice of Franklin County, and the many relatives, friends, colleagues, and students who supported Gail and our family over the recent weeks.
