Joan C. (Peters) Keena, 80

Beloved Wife, Adored Mother

and Cherished "Cookie" Grandma

WESTMINSTER -- Joan C. (Peters) Keena, 80, died peacefully in her home, on Wednesday, July 16, 2014, after an illness.

Joan is easily remembered for her kindness and enthusiastic spirit, you couldn't help but smile in her company, she made sure of it! Her enthusiasm encouraged others to find excitement in life's little blessings, to make a party out of any gathering, and to not let any milestone slip by without sufficient celebration. She always knew the way to add some sparkle to every day, and she passed on that love to anyone she met! Through her famous gift of conversation Joan could quickly turn the stranger beside her into a new friend. She knew the true value of friendship and cherished her many lunch dates with longtime lady friends who not only enjoyed the ride with her but knew where she could find the best Reuben sandwiches. There was always a seat for you at her table, a beautiful smile to greet you with, and open arms ready to hug you with every hello and goodbye...

Joan often said with her distinctively happy voice, "Anything I touch turns into a collection.", well evidenced by her plethora of spoons, tea-infusers, baskets, teddy bears, candles, pumpkin recipes, angels, even rocks! Most treasured by her though were her collections of hugs and happy memories. Her artistic side showed through in her painting and gardening, and she left behind the gift of her warmth in many hand knit afghans she made lovingly for friends and family, and prayer shawls for those in need.

Joan was a lifetime member of the Westminster Historical Society, active with the Westminster Seniors, Council on Aging, Westminster Friendship Club participant and former Red Hat Society member. She was always ready to lend a hand wherever she might be needed. She wanted to give something to everyone, whether it was leftovers from a great meal, or a special piece of one of her collections, you never left her house empty-handed.

Joan was born in Leonia, New Jersey, on November 19, 1933, 2nd daughter of the late Carl E. and Anna (Burcke) Peters. After graduating Leonia High School in 1952, Joan worked for a short time at Mutual of New York in Midtown Manhattan.

Joan blessed Westminster with her presence in March 1966, moving from Montvale, NJ to the Church St. home she designed and built with her husband Jack. Joan was an active member of St. Edward the Confessor Church, where through the years she was a Eucharistic minister, former choir member, "linen laundry lady", and member of the St. Edwards Women's Guild with many proud years behind the scenes of their very successful bake booth at the church's Fall Festival. Joan was a joyous member of the Morning Mass Mob at St. Edwards, celebrating daily masses during the week, often followed by a group breakfast or coffee with a side of laughter!

She leaves her husband of 59 years, John "Jack" F. Keena, Jr., married on October 8, 1955. She leaves one son, Kevin Keena, and his wife Jeanne, one daughter, MaryBeth D. Keena, all of Westminster; two grandchildren, Justin J. Keena, and his wife Merry, of Emeryville, CA, and Kelly J. Keena, of Westminster; one sister Marjorie Tosi of Saddle River, NJ and one brother John "Jackie" Peters and his wife, Joan's beloved sister-in-law Fran of Grahamsville, NY. Joan is predeceased by her brother-in-law, Albert "Al" Tosi of Saddle River, NJ.

Joan will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
