FITCHBURG -- John J. Putis, 88, of Fitchburg, died Wednesday morning, January 30, in the Health Alliance Leominster Hospital, surrounded by his family.
He was born on Feb. 9, 1924, in Nashua, NH, a son of the late Michael T. and Mary Ann (Yesicavitch) Putis, and was a graduate of Nashua High School.
John was a WWII veteran, having served in the U.S. Army and later in the Air Force Reserves.
Following his discharge from the military, John went to work as a master pipe fitter at the Crocker Burbank Paper Company and later the Weyerhaeuser Paper Company in Fitchburg. After the paper mills closed, John went to work for the City of Fitchburg as an Inventory Control Coordinator for the Waste Water Department, retiring in 2002.
He was an avid golfer and former member of the Westminster County Club, who played in various golf leagues throughout the area. He was a licensed pilot and member of the former Holy Rosary Parish. Several years ago, he played in the Crocker Burbank Softball League and volunteered as an umpire with the Fitchburg Little League.
John was a quiet and assuming man whose true love was surrounding himself with his family.
His wife, Eleanor M. (Montesion) Putis, died in 1995. He leaves a son, Michael J. Putis and his husband, Carl Young of New York City; two daughters, Patricia A. Gendron and her husband, Michael, of Rindge, NH and Kristine M. Caravella and her husband, Kevin, of Fitchburg; six grandchildren, Leslie Veneziano and her husband, Joshua, of Fitchburg, Natalie Smith and her husband, Derek, of Kingston, RI, Anthony Caravella, Olivia Caravella, Francesca Caravella and Sophia Caravella, all of Fitchburg; a great-grandson, Alexander John Smith a sister, Julia Karlonas, of Nashua, NH and several nephews and nieces.
Besides his wife, he is predeceased by a sister, Josephine Greatchus.
PUTIS -- His funeral will be held on Friday, February 1, from the Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM in St. Anthony di Padua Church, 84 Salem St. Burial will be in the St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours in the funeral home will be held on Thursday, Jan. 31, from 4 to 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the
