FITCHBURG -- Michael J. Caravella 84, of Fitchburg, MA., passed away Monday morning in Health Alliance Leominster Hospital.

Mike was born on December 28,1927 in Brooklyn, New York the son of Joseph and Angeline (DiBenedetti) Caravella. He was raised in Brooklyn and was a graduate of Brooklyn High School for specialty trades in 1946. Shortly after he graduated he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was part of the 82nd Airborn Division. He was trained in mobile and fixed ground radar equipment and served in Alaska. He was honorably discharged in 1947.

He worked 10 years as a production manager for the former Seth Thomas Co. in Fitchburg, MA., and previously he worked many years at the former Tom's Food World and Victory Market's. He retired in 1983. He was a long time communicant at the former Sacred Heart of Jesus and was an active member in the Church Choir. He was also a member of the Veterans International Chores, the Sons of Italy, The St. Joseph's Club, American Legion Post 429, and was past president of the Retired Men's Club all in Fitchburg, MA. . Mike was also well known as an umpire in the city Little League and Men's softball League for many years. He was currently a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Fitchburg.

He is survived by his wife Theresa (Rouleau) Caravella, his two sons, Donald M. Caravella and his wife Donna of Stafford Springs, CT., Stephen G. Caravella and his wife Donna of Fitchburg, MA., his daughter Donna McMillan and her husband Kyle of Fitchburg, MA., six grandchildren, Jeffrey, Nicholas, Anthony, Jaymie Lynne, Laurie and Stephanie, three great-grandchildren, Lillian, Griffin, and Theresa along with several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his brother Alexander Caravella in Florida.

CARAVELLA -- The funeral will be held on Friday December 7, 2012 with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St Joseph's Church, 49 Woodland St., Fitchburg. Interment with Military Honors will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours will be on Thursday evening December 6, 2012 at the funeral home from 5 until 7p.m. The Lavery Chartrand & Alario Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., Fitchburg, MA. is directing.
