Michael T. McManus, 74
lifelong resident of Fitchburg

FITCHBURG - Michael T. McManus, 74, a lifelong resident of Fitchburg, passed away unexpectedly after being stricken ill on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at UMass Memorial Health Care, Worcester.

Michael was born in Fitchburg on March 13, 1944, a son of the late John L. and Mary (Cassidy) McManus.

He is survived by seven siblings: Kathleen Barnicoat of Fitchburg, John "Jack" McManus Jr. and his wife Ellen of Attleboro, Rosemary Ware of Northampton, Peg McManus Andreadis and her husband Theodore of Cheshire, CT, Eleanor Carter of Fitchburg, Julie McManus and her significant other Craig McColl of Holden and Patty Rudick of Ashburnham, his brother Stephen's significant other, Diane Hastings of Phillipston, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Michael was predeceased by two brothers, Terry McManus and Stephen McManus and one sister, Maureen Mahoney.

Michael was a 1962 graduate of Notre Dame High School where he participated in the Glee Club and the Debating Club. He graduated from Holy Cross College in 1966. He was employed as a state social worker in the Fitchburg office for many years. Michael will be remembered as a quiet and gentle man of great integrity with a strong Catholic faith. He was an avid runner who completed more than twenty Boston Marathons. He was an enthusiastic fan of Boston sports, especially his beloved Red Sox. He had a true passion for music, enjoyed reading, playing chess and completing crossword puzzles. He was a volunteer for several years for Meals on Wheels. Michael traveled extensively, visiting Ireland several times.

MCMANUS - A funeral Mass for Michael and his brother Terry who passed away on July 8 will be held on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at 10am in St. Camillus Church, 333 Mechanic St., Fitchburg. Burial will follow in St. Bernard Cemetery, Fitchburg. Calling hours will be held on Monday, July 16, 2018 from 4-8pm in the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St. Fitchburg. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Relief Services, 228 W. Lexington St., Baltimore, MD 21201.
