Bernard F. Mayer, 91
FITCHBURG -- Bernard "Bernie" Mayer, 91, of Fitchburg, died February 3, 2014. He passed peacefully in the company of his children, Susan of Princeton, Greg of Dallas and Bob of Athol. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Rainore; his sisters, Jeanine Jeffrey and Cecile Crosmun, and his brother, Roger. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Alexandra and Andrew; daughter-in-law, Carol; son-in-law, Hal Melanson; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert and his sister, Claire Pins.
The eldest son of Fortunat and Georgianna (Pouliot) Mayer, Bernie grew up in Fitchburg, attending St. Joseph School as well as St. Bernard's and Fitchburg High Schools. He served in the US Navy during World War II on the island of Saipan. He was a longtime sales representative for Star Container of Leominster before his retirement at the age of 76. He was also a master barber and printer.
Bernie was known for his fondness of nice cars and his many stories. But, what he will be remembered for by his family most, is his devotion to his wife, his children and his grandchildren.
MAYER -- His funeral will be held on Saturday, Feb. 8, from the Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM in St. Bernard's Parish at St. Camillus de Lellis Church, 333 Mechanic St., Fitchburg. Burial with military honors will be held in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Winchendon. Calling hours in the funeral home will be held on Friday, Feb. 7, from 5 to 8 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Fitchburg Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans, 343 Walton St., Fitchburg, MA 01420.
