FITCHBURG -- Eila R. Nousuniemi, 93, of Fitchburg, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014, in the Golden Living Center.
Eila was born on June 10, 1920, the youngest of nine children of the late Tuomas and Maria (Hakala) Saariaho. She came to the United States in 1958 from Finland. Eila worked for the Bay State Curtain Company as a stitcher and also as a housekeeper for many years.
She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Fitchburg.
Eila was very active; she loved to garden, cross country ski, and ice-fish. She was an exceptional baker, specializing in her Finnish coffee bread, cakes, and cookies. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and visiting Foxwoods whenever possible. Eila vacationed at the Cape in the summer with her family, who were her world. She loved to have her family around; she was "Mummu" to all family and friends of grandchildren and their parents.
She leaves her children, daughters, Kirsti Laitala and her husband, John, Hilkka Primeau, and Ulla St. Louis and her husband, Roland; grandchildren, Daniela Nelson, John D. Laitala, Julie Primeau, Gregory St. Louis, Jeffrey St. Louis; great-grandchildren, Nicholas Nelson, Reilly and Avery Laitala, Elizabeth and Andrew St. Louis, Sianna St. Louis; nieces and nephews.
Eila was predeceased by her husband, Veikko Nousuniemi, her son-in-law, David Primeau, her grandson, Christopher Primeau, and her eight siblings.
NOUSUNIEMI -- Services will be held privately at a later date. Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg is directing arrangements.
