LUNENBURG -- John R. Cromwell Sr., 83, died Saturday, July 5, in Apple Valley Center, Ayer, after a long illness. The only child of Reginald W., and Lucille M. (McDermod) Cromwell, he was born in Malden, MA on September 16, 1930. He was a 1948 graduate of Malden High School where he was a varsity lineman on the football team.
He joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1948 and retired in 1968 after twenty years of active duty. During his career, he served tours of duty on Ebye in the Marshall Islands at the time of the second H-Bomb detonation. Other assignments included Nantucket, Alaska, combat duty in Vietnam in 1967-1968 and several years of sea-duty. He retired with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. His decorations included the Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unity Citation Medal, the Coast Guard Restricted Duty Medal, the Coast Guard Sea Service Medal, and a Letter of Commendation from the Commander of the U.S. Navy Seventh Fleet.
Mr. Cromwell was a repairer and restorer of antique clocks and an avid antique collector in his spare time. After his retirement from the Coast Guard, he was employed by the Digital Equipment Corp. for 17 years, first as a technical writer and later in management. His assignments while at Digital included Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Reading and in England. At the time of his retirement from Digital, he was Corporate Manager of Hardware Technical Writing.
A graduate of RCA Institutes in New York City, he was a member of the Institute of Electric and Electronics Engineers. He was also an amateur radio operator with the call sign WA1GCY, and a member of the Montachusett Amateur Radio club.
A former commander of the Leominster Post 1807 Veterans of Foreign Wars, he was also a member of the American Legion, Coast Guard Combat Veterans Association, Military Officers Association and the Coast Guard Warrant Officers Association.
He leaves his loving wife of 62 years, Eleanor (Degen) Cromwell; one son, John R. Cromwell Jr., and his wife Cheryl of Townsend; one daughter, Faith A. Clarke of Los Altos, CA; six grandchildren, Matthew, Michael, and Kara Cromwell of Townsend, Chase Clarke of Los Altos, CA, Carolyn Muniz of Fitchburg and Renee Bryan of Gainsville, FL; four great-grandsons, Alexander and Nicco Muniz of Fitchburg and Caleb and Liam Bryan of Gainsville, FL. He was predeceased by a daughter, Nancy Sicard of Leominster in 2011.

CROMWELL -- Committal prayers with Full Military Honors will be held on Monday, July 14, at 1:00 p.m. in the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen St., Winchendon, MA. Rev. Renee Anderson will officiate.
There are no calling hours.
