ASHBY -- Dagne H. (Ulmanis) McAuley, 89, formerly of Ashby, died peacefully, August 17, 2014, at Bedford Falls in Bedford, New Hampshire.
She was the beloved wife of Dr. Robert L. McAuley who predeceased her on April 6, 2013.
Dagne was born in Riga, Latvia the daughter of Henry and Helene (Liepings) Ulmanis.
Dagne and her mother left Latvia in WWII during the Russian occupation and became refugees in Germany until 1948. That year she migrated to Canada while her mother settled in the Boston area. In 1952 Dagne was able to join her mother in Boston and attended Boston University receiving a masters degree in languages in 1954. While at Boston University she met her future husband, Robert, who was then a medical student. They married in 1956 and began a family.
Dagne was a gourmet cook, avid gardener, horse and dog breeder. She delivered over 70 foals in 25 years of breeding Trakehner horses. She then took up driving horses and was a member of the Granite State Carriage Association.
Dagne is survived by her son and daughter-in-law; Philip and Ligia McAuley of Amherst NH; her daughter, Charlotte McAuley of Ashby. She also leaves 2 grandchildren, Mariela McAuley and Erik McAuley, both of Amherst, NH.
MCAULEY -- The service, interment and celebration of her life will be private.
