LEOMINSTER -- Edward J. Wirtanen, 88, formerly of 598 North Main St., Leominster, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 20, 2011.
Edward was born in Worcester on May 8, 1922, son of the late John and Hilma (Sorrsen) Wirtanen.
He worked for Foster Grant Company as a foreman, and retired after 30 years.
Edward served his country in the United States Navy during World War II.
He loved woodworking, making birdhouses was his specialty. He also loved band concerts, but most of all, he loved to socialize.
He leaves his daughter, Linda LeBlanc and her husband, Cedric of Fitchburg; his granddaughter, April-Lynn Boucher and her husband, Kevin of Leominster; his companion and caregiver, Mary Kalinen of Leominster; brothers, Everett Wirtanen and his wife, Pauline of Ashburnham, Robert Wirtanen of Worcester; sisters-in-law, Jeannine Wirtanen of Westminster, Naoma Pajari of West Townsend, Dawn Spingla of Leominster, Gail Watson and her husband, Robert of Leominster; many nieces and nephews; a good friend, Doris Watkins, and his cat, Max Morris.
Edward was predeceased by his wife, Ellen (Rines) Wirtanen in 2004, his brothers, Edwin and Richard Wirtanen, brothers-in-law, Angelo Spingla and Richard Pajari.
WIRTANEN -- Funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made to the Pat Brody Shelter, P.O. Box 142, Lunenburg, MA 01462. Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg is assisting the family with arrangements.
