ASHBURNHAM -- Alice W. Douglas, 73, a resident of Ashburnham for many years, died Tuesday, October 9, 2012, in her home, after a long illness, surrounded by her loving family.
She leaves her husband of 53 years, Melvin B. Douglas; three sons, Michael A. Douglas, and his wife, Kristen, of Belmont, MA, Timothy M. Douglas, and his wife, Susan, of Winchendon, MA, and David E. Douglas of Westminster, MA; one daughter, Bridget E. Paine, and her husband, Kevin, of Fremont, NH; eight grandchildren, Amanda, Ryan, Austin, Timothy, Angela and Haley Douglas and Gabrielle and Carter Paine; and two step grandchildren, Barron and Michael Hiltz.
Mrs. Douglas retired in 1996 from the Ayer School District, where she worked in the Superintendent of Schools Office for 10 years. Previously, she was employed at the former Selig Manufacturing Company in Leominster in the payroll office for 12 years, and after her retirement she was employed by Interim Health Care in Worcester for several years.
She was a member of St. Anne's Parish in Ashburnham, attended St. Bernard's Elementary School in Fitchburg, was a 1956 graduate of the former Ashby High School, and was a 1958 graduate of the former Wards Business School in Worcester.
She was an active member of the Oakmont Booster Club and the Oakmont Courtside Club, where she served as Secretary and Treasurer for 22 years. She was inducted into the Oakmont Hall of Fame in 1999.
She enjoyed bingo, reading, and crossword puzzles, but mostly spending time with her grandchildren and family.
She was born in Fitchburg, on February 2, 1939, a daughter of the late Austin H., and Edna (O'Connor) McHugh.
DOUGLAS -- Her Funeral will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct. 13, from the Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli and the Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., Fitchburg, with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anne's Church, 158 Center St., Ashburnham, MA. Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Fitchburg. Calling hours at the Funeral Home are Friday, Oct. 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. Flowers may be sent or memorial contributions may be made to the Heywood Hospital Oncology Dept., 242 Green St., Gardner, MA 01440; or to the Gardner VNA and Hospice, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440, or may be left at the Funeral Home.
