Westminster Resident for 59 years

WESTMINSTER -- Richard H. Lawrence, Jr. 83, died Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at the Highlands after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Elaine M. (Wenzel) Lawrence, three sons Richard H. Lawrence, III, and his wife Jian Yang of Beijing, China, Roger W. Lawrence and his wife Sarah Lyon of Worcester and John C. Lawrence and his wife Tracy of Sterling, six grandchildren Sarah Lawrence, Jeremy Lawrence, Emily Lawrence, Eleanor Lawrence, Hannah Lawrence, Nathaniel Lawrence, Elizabeth Lawrence, and Katherine Lawrence, two sisters Elizabeth Thoms of New Ipswich, NH, and Ellen Lundberg of OR, and several nieces and nephews.

Richard was born in Fitchburg on November 26, 1928 a son of the late Richard H. and Stella (Cushing) Lawrence. He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover in 1946 and then he graduated from Amherst College in 1950, (cum laude), with a BA in Chemistry. In his early years he worked at Simonds Saw and Steel as a product manager of machine knives. He then worked for his family Lumber business the former Lawrence and Klein Lumber Co. of Fitchburg, where he was president. He then was the president of the Dick Lawrence Lumber Co. in Westminster until his retirement. He also was a fixture at the Forbush Memorial Library in Westminster where he was a Clerk for many years.

Throughout Richard's life he served on many boards and committees which include the: Water Safety Chair; Fitchburg Red Cross; Oakmont Regional Exploratory Committee; Oakmont Regional School Committee; 1st Police Dept. Building Committee; 4-H Garden Club; Post Office Advisory Committee; Walkonen Lumber Association (fundraising for Library); Pledge Treasurer, Christ Church, Fitchburg; New England Wholesale Lumber Association; Treasurer (three terms), Secretary (two terms), President (one term); Member and Treasurer Republican Town Committee, several years, helped in one Phillips Academy fund drive. His interests included being an avid vegatable gardener, and amateur Botanist, who could easily identify wildflowers, plants and trees by both common and Latin names, a versatile home chef, non-fiction and science reading, as well as spending time with his grandchildren.

LAWRENCE -- Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, November 11, 2012 at Christ Church, 569 Main Street, Fitchburg, MA 01420 at 1:30 P.M.

Burial will be private at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Westminster, MA.

Calling Hours will be on Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 3:00 -- 5:00 p.m. at the Westminster Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 123 Main Street, Westminster, MA 01473.

In lieu of Flowers, Memorial Contributions can be made in Richard's name to either the Forbush Memorial Library, 11 South Street, Westminster, MA 01473 or the American Parkinson Disease Association, 720 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA 02118 or may be left at the Funeral Home.
