SPENCER -- Ledea (Duval) Berube, 102, died Friday evening, Nov. 30, in her home surrounded by her family.
Ledea was born in Fitchburg on Dec. 22, 1909, a daughter of the late Joseph and Aimee (Deschennes) Duval. She had lived in Fitchburg for most of her life before moving to Meriden CT. and then to Spencer where, since 2009 she has been the oldest resident in the town.
She had worked until the age of 85 as a housekeeper in the rectory of St. Laurent Parish in Meriden, CT. Prior to that, Ledea had worked for several years in the quality control and other departments of the Foster Grant Company. She was very proud of a device she had invented called "Ledea's Bombardier", a strength test for the lenses of pilots glasses. Several decades ago, as a young woman, she had also worked as a receptionist in several area doctors' offices.
Ledea had a strong faith and would attend daily Mass at the St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer. She was a current member of Christ the King Parish in Worcester and former member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Fitchburg where she was a member of the Ladies of St. Anne.
Known to so many as "Memere" she was a recipient of the Boston Post Road Cane, and for the past two years was the Grand Marshal of the Christmas Parade of Lights in Spencer. Ledea was also the oldest member of Feminists for Life.
Her husband, Henry "Bill" Berube died in 1976. She leaves a daughter, Nancy D. Berube, MD and her husband John Stevens of Spencer; a sister, Yvonne Lizzotte and her husband Robert of Fitchburg; nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. She is predeceased by a son, Dr. Raymond A. Berube of Fitchburg who died in January, as well as five brothers and three sisters.
BERUBE -- Her funeral will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, from the Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. Francis as Assisi Church, 81 Sheridan St., Fitchburg. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be held on Friday, Dec. 7, from 6 to 8 PM. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, 72 Church St., Putnam, CT 06260 or to the St. Joseph's Abbey, 167 North Spencer Rd., Spencer, MA 01562, or to the Feminists for Life of America, P.O.
