WAYCROSS, GA -- George A. Barton, 90, died Sunday night (April 7, 2013) at Hospice House Satilla following an extended illness.
He was a native of Orangeburg, SC but had lived most of his life in Massachusetts. He had made his home Waycross, GA since 1987. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eilleen M. (Bashaw) Barton, his second wife, Evelyn (Schumacher Bernier) Barton, and his parents, John Barton and Wilhelmina Barton.
He retired from the United States Army in 1963 after serving 22 years. During his military career he served in World War 2 and the Korean War. He saw action in Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, and Japan. He was present during the liberation of the Concentration Camps at Auschwitz. After his military retirement he retired in 1983 as a machinist with the Bendix Corporation in Worcester, MA
He was a member of the Okefenokee Chapter of Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and was an avid golfer.
Survivors include his daughter; Rosalie Barton-May of Waycross, GA, a son-in-law; Ronald L. May of Lancaster, MA, 2 step-sons; Robert Bernier (wife Jan) of Ellerslie, MD, and Peter Bernier of Augusta, ME, several step-grandchildren, and cousins, Wayne Hicks (wife Adrie) of Florence SC and Tommie Carol Barton of Charleston, SC.
BARTON -- A funeral service was held on Thursday (April 11, 2013) at Music Funeral Home Chapel, Waycross, GA. The family received friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM Thursday at Music Funeral Home.
Locally, there will be a calling hour from the Simard Funeral Home, 14 Walker Street, Leominster on Friday April 19, 2013 from 10:00am-11:00am. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday (April 19, 2013) at St. John's Cemetery in Lancaster, MA.
