Helvi V. Eskelinen; 88
FITCHBURG -- Helvi V. (Kalliokoski) Eskelinen, 88, a longtime Fitchburg resident, died Thursday, June 13, in the Golden Living Center, Fitchburg, after a long illness.
Her husband of 66 years, Yrjo K. Eskelinen, died in 2011.
She leaves one son, Ilkka E. Eskelinen, and his wife, Cindy, of Temple, NH; and one daughter, Sirkku Ashton, and her husband, Bill, of Leominster; two sisters, Anja Honga in Sweden and Kerttu Roimela in Finland; five grandchildren, Sonja, Julia and William Thomas Ashton, and Nicholas and Anja Eskelinen; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by one son, Mauno K. Eskelinen, of Lakeworth, FL, who died in 2003, and a brother, Paavo Kalliokoski in Finland.
Mrs. Eskelinen was an active member of the Messiah Lutheran Church, and its' Women's Circle. She enjoyed cooking and reading.
During World War II, Helvi served as a Lotta, which was the voluntary Finnish Military Service for women.
She was born in Toholampi, Finland, on September 14, 1924, a daughter of the late Antti and Aino (Honkala) Kalliokoski.
ESKELINEN -- Funeral Services and Burial will be private in Forest Hill Cemetery, Fitchburg. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Messiah Lutheran Church, 750 Rindge Rd., Fitchburg, MA 01420. The Smith-Mallahy-Masciarelli and Fitchburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Home, 243 Water St., Fitchburg, MA, is directing Funeral arrangements.
