Charles J. (Charlie) Granata of Leominster; 88 -- LEOMINSTER -- Charles J. (Charlie) Granata, 88, of Leominster passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 14, 2013 with his family by his side. He was born in Fitchburg on December 7, 1924, a son of the late Sebastiano and Vincenza (Cali) Granata. Charlie was a US Navy veteran of WWII, having achieved the rank of Yeoman Third Class. He served aboard the USS Alaska-CB-1, the first battle cruiser built for the Navy. He was the recipient of the WWII Victory Medal, American Campaign, Asiatic/Pacific WWII Battle Star, and the Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Philippines Liberation Medals. Charlie was the Traffic Manager for United Sterilite Co., of Fitchburg and Townsend, and the former George Frost Co., of Shirley. He was also the Sales Representative for the former Crowley Motor Express company, retiring in 1988. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Phyllis V. (Angelini) Granata; four daughters, Donna Gauthier and her husband Carl, Beth Granata, Lori Collier, and Melissa Daniels and her husband Jason; one son, Charles J. Granata, Jr., and one brother, Anthony Granata and his wife Jane, all of Leominster. He also leaves nine grandchildren, Ryan Gauthier, Melanie Egan, Madison, Joshua, and Nathan Daniels, Carly and Jackson Sheehan, and two great-grandchildren, Alexis Gauthier and Veronica Egan. Charlie was predeceased by his son, John J. Granata and granddaughters, Amy Granata and Stephanie Gauthier, a brother, Leon Granata, and his sisters, Pauline Goguen and Jennie Bronson. GRANATA -- The funeral will be held from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Rd., Fitchburg on Thursday, July 18, 2013 with a Mass in Saint Anna's Church, Leominster at 10AM. Burial will follow in Saint Leo's Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday July 17, 2013 from 5-7PM in the funeral home.
