Robert O. Goguen
of Ashby, decorated WWll Veteran; 90

ASHBY -- Robert O. Goguen, 90, a former longtime resident of Foster Road, died Sunday, October 13, 2013, at University of Massachusetts Hospital, Worcester.

Mr. Goguen was born in Fitchburg, July 24, 1923, a son of George and Lodia (Langlois) Goguen, and had spent much of his life in Ashby.

He attended parochial schools in Fitchburg, but following the outbreak of WWII, left before his graduation to enlist in the United States Army. While serving in the Armed Forces, he was assigned to Service Company 275th Infantry Regiment and was the recipient of the Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Arrowhead and on March 1, 1944 received the Purple Heart Medal, and the rank of Knight of the Legion of the Honor of France. In 2003, Mr. Goguen and several other area veterans who had left school early to serve their country, were presented with their high school diplomas by the superintendent of the North Middlesex Regional High School District in Townsend.

Following his discharge from military service, he went to work for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of Parks and Recreation. At the time of retirement in 1984, he was the supervisor of Willard Brook State Park in Ashby.

Mr. Goguen was an avid musician, playing in several groups including the Old Tyme Jazz Band, Riverboat Stompers, and Amoskeag Strummers.

He was a member of the Ashby VFW and regularly marched in the Memorial Day Parades. He had been active in the Ashby Boy Scout program, served on the Ashby Library Board of Trustees, and also as an Auxiliary Police officer in the town of Ashby.

He leaves his wife of 63 years, Lois A. (Boudreau) Goguen; three sons, Wilfred R. Goguen and his wife, Cheri, of Harpswell, ME, Peter A. Goguen and his wife, Ruthann, of Ashby, Daniel A. Goguen of Mason, NH; two daughters, Nancy L.G. Lippincott of Spencer, Barbara J. Goguen and her husband, Phillip Morimoto of Somerville; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was the brother of the late Rene T. Goguen and Viola Dufour, both of Ashby, and Pauline McGuiggan of Ware.

GOGUEN -- Funeral services will be held 11 a.m, Saturday, October 19, 2013 at the T.J. Anderson & Son Funeral Home, 250 Main Street (Rte. 119), Townsend Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to All Frets Foundation, 2501 Saddleback Drive, Edmond, OK 73034.
