Loving husband, father, and grandfather; 79
LUNENBURG -- Jack Smethurst, 79, died Friday, November 1, 2013, at UMass Memorial Health Care, in Worcester, after an illness.
Jack leaves his wife of 58 years, Annie (Goodier) Smethurst; four children, Paul Smethurst, and his wife, Carol, of Fitchburg, Karen Hanrahan, of Aliquippa, PA, Chuck Smethurst, and his wife, Pam, of Groton, and Andrea Brady, her husband, John, of Ashburnham; 10 grandchildren, Joshua Hanrahan, and his wife, Amy, of Moon Township, PA, USMC SGT, Christopher Hanrahan and his wife, Melanie, of Aliquippa, PA, David Shaw and Christine Shaw, both of Nuremburg, Germany, Brian Brady and Sarah Brady, both of Ashburnham, Emily Smethurst, Maddy Smethurst, Jack Smethurst, and Sam Smethurst, all of Groton; two great-grandchildren, Brayden Hanrahan, and Jace Hanrahan, both of Aliquippa, PA.
Jack was born in Manchester, England, on May 8, 1934, a son of the late James and Zenith (Brimelow) Smethurst. He was educated in England, and worked as an engineer, for the Crompton Paper Co., in Bury, England. He moved his family to the United States in 1968, and became a US Citizen in 1976. He was an engineer for the American Tool and Machine Co., in Fitchburg for most of his career. Jack retired as a consultant for many companies.
Jack was a member of the Charles W. Moore Lodge AF & AM, in Fitchburg. He was a past Master of the Lodge, a Past DDGM of the Lodge, a Past DDGM of the Chapter, and a member of the Shriners, and the Knights Templar, Commandery
He had a great love of Manchester United Football. Jack will be remembered as a wonderful, loving man.
SMETHURST -- Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2013, at 11:00 am, in the Charles W. Moore Lodge, 16 Thorndike Street, Fitchburg, MA 01420. Burial will be at a later date. Calling Hours will be on Wednesday, November 6, 2013, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. in the Lunenburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 763 Mass Avenue, Lunenburg, MA 01462. In Lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions can be made in Jack's name to the Shriners Hospital, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114.
