Johnny Arthur FLORENCE -- Funeral service for Mr. Johnny Arthur will be conducted 1PM Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at New Ebenezer Baptist Church, 307 S. Ravenel St., Florence. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery directed by Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC. Johnny, a son of the late John Edward and Edell Evans Arthur was born in Darlington County on July 6, 1941. He died on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at McLeod Regional Medical Center after an illness. Johnny created his own occupation of cooking and selling peanuts. He was a member of New Ebenezer Baptist Church for over 50 years. Johnny was a resident of Faith Nursing Home for many years. He loved singing with Charity Gospel Singers. He was preceded in death by Dorothy Robinson, Rena Murray, Pearlie Mae Robinson, Frances Ann Grate, Shirley Robinson and Catherine Robinson. Survivors include a brother, Curtis (Josephine) Arthur; a sister, Patricia Robinson; one aunt, Pearlease Moses; 16 nieces; 8 nephews; other relatives and friends. The family is receiving friends at 3695 Trotwood Dr. and 802 Walnut St., Florence.

Nell Baker CADES -- Mrs. Nell Green Baker, age 80, of Cades passed away May 17, 2013 at her residence. Services will be held at 11am Monday, May 20, 2013 at Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery, directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta. Visitation will be held (tonight) May 19, 2013 from 5-7pm at the church. Mrs. Baker was a daughter of the late Gleaton Eugene Green and Sara Levina Robinson Green. In all that Mrs. Baker did she exemplified a life of Christian servanthood and love for God. She served her family and her community through her hard work and commitment to excellence, during her years of work at the Warsaw Manufacturing Company of Kingstree and Belk of Lake City. She served the kingdom of God as a lifetime member of Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church. For the last 14 years she served faithfully as the Horse Branch FWB Church secretary. She dedicated her life to the Christian training of young people through over 4 decades of service as a Sunday School teacher and many years as a CTS teacher. She helped in the building of the kingdom of God locally and around the world through more than 24 years as the President and a member of the Horse Branch FWB Women's Auxiliary. She helped disciple and edify others through more than 40 years as a deacon's wife. She sought to serve her church and community during her years of service in the Horse Branch FWB Dorcas Circle. When she saw a need in her family, church or community she sought to fill that need, even at the cost of great sacrifice on her part. For 80 years her love of Christ, her family and the church was apparent in all that she did. She is preceded in death by a sister, Theo Green Coker; a brother, Euston Green; a brother in- law Carey Poss; two sister in- laws, Emily McElveen Green, Mildred Watts Green, also in- laws Lloyd and Clytie Baker. She is survived by her husband, Nauvard L. Baker of Cades; three daughters, Vickie (Scott) Poston of Scranton, Cathy (Thurman) Springs of Lake City, Pam (Stan) Coker of Woodlawn, TN; two sons, Andy (Wanda) Baker of Cades, Lloyd (Danielle) Baker of Lake City; two sisters, Sarah Poss of Gainesville, Florida, Shirley (Sam) Knight of Lake City; one brother, Van Green of Turbeville; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Joseph Furman Boswell, Jr. LAKE CITY -- Mr. Joseph Furman Boswell, Jr., 88, departed this life on May the 16th, 2013. Mr. Boswell was born in Manning on December the 11th, 1924. He was a son of the late Joseph Furman Boswell, Sr. and the late Viva Ann Floyd Boswell; and was the widower of the late Tracie Davis Boswell. Mr. Boswell grew up in Manning, and was educated in the schools of Clarendon County. He graduated from Manning High School in 1942, and went on to attend Coker College. Mr. Boswell was drafted into the military, and honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He fought with the famed 9th Infantry Division under Major Manton Eddy in the 39th Regiment, Alpha Company. The 9th Infantry was known as "Old Reliable", and saw extensive combat action in the European Theater. Mr. Boswell earned three battle stars and the Purple Heart for his bravery and skill during the many campaigns fought across the Rhineland, North Africa, and Central Europe. Mr. Boswell was the co-owner of Floyd Motor Company in Lake City, where he worked for the past sixty-six years. He was a long-time member of the Lake City United Methodist Church, where he served in many capacities assisting and supporting the church since his joining in 1954. Mr. Boswell was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt, fish, and play golf, going often with his son, Jody. Mr. Boswell was an exceptional wingshooter, and shot ducks and doves well into his eighties. Mr. Boswell's surviving family includes his two children, Joseph Furman Boswell, III (Martha), and Deborah Boswell Gardner (John); his five grandchildren, Sarah Boswell Holmes, Mary Grace Boswell Mungo, Muffy Merrit Fulmer, Ashley Andrews Tanner, and Al Andrews; and his six great-grandchildren. Mr. Boswell is preceded in death by his brother, Dalton Floyd Boswell. The family of Mr. Boswell will have calling hours from five until seven o'clock p.m., Sunday, May the 19th, in the funeral home. Funeral services for Mr. Boswell will be conducted at eleven o'clock a.m., Monday, May the 20th, in the Lake City United Methodist Church, officiated by The Reverend Doctor Samuel E. Marcengill. Burial and committal services will be held immediately following the funeral in the Lake City Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family of Mr. Boswell kindly requests for memorials to be made to the Lake City United Methodist Church, 229 West Main Street, Lake City, South Carolina 29560; or to the charity of one's choosing. Brockington Funeral Home, Lake City, is in charge.

Carolyn Winburn Burden COLUMBIA- Funeral service for Carolyn Winburn Burden, 87, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2013, at Calvary Baptist Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mrs. Burden died Sunday, May 12, 2013. Born in Hartsville, she was a daughter of the late Theodore and Carrie Ousley Winburn. She graduated from Columbia Hospital Nursing School and retired as a nurse at VA Hospital and the S.C. Department of Mental Health at Tucker Center. An active member of Calvary Baptist Church, she enjoyed gardening. Surviving are her son, Kenneth Hoffman (Bernie) of Columbia; sister, Ruth Winburn of Columbia; grandchildren, Kenneth Hoffman Jr., Michael Hoffman, Carrie Jones (Steve), Jessica Hoffman, Jonathan Hoffman (Brittany); and great-grandchildren, Brian Hoffman and Faith Jones. Winfred Burnett FLORENCE - Funeral service for Mr. Winfred "Claw" Morris Burnett will be 4PM Wednesday in Peoples Funeral Service of Florence Chapel. Burial will be in Greendale Cemetery in Meadville, PA. He died Friday May 10, 2013. He was born in Zebulon, GA a son of the late K. C. and Ida Ruth Burnett. He was employed at Union Carbide and APAC of Carolina. His hobby and pastime was as a furniture craftsman. Survivors include: his wife of 37 years, Mamie L. Burnett; a son Andre Cathy, Lamar Solonski; a daughter Meisha Williamson, Dana (Rasheem) Williamson Salters; six bro-thers; four sisters; fourteen grandchildren, Andreanna Burnett, Kina Glover, Yatsleahk Zevulum, Meshael Zevulum, Brooklyn Richardson, Nasir Rich-ardson, Akia Williamson, Billy Williamson, Akeem Williamson, Tyrone Singletary, Shadacea New-some, Jakavia Solonski, Rayne Solonski and Jermaine Winn, Jr.; two great grandchildren of the home, Lauren Kelly and Amiyah Williamson and 8 great grandchildren. ULDINE STOKES CAPELL FLORENCE, S.C. - ULDINE STOKES CAPELL, 86, of Florence, passed away Sunday, May 12, 2013 in a Florence hospital after an illness. Mrs. Capell was born in Florence, a daughter of the late Clarence Edward and Effie McElveen Stokes. She had retired from J.C. Penney after 20 years. Mrs. Capell was a member of the Florence Baptist Temple and the Adult Senior Sunday School Class. She had a lifelong hobby of writing poetry and sharing it with her family and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Capell was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert J. Capell, Sr, by a daughter, Deborah Capell Todd, and by her brother, Benny William Stokes, Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Dianne Capell Conner of Effingham; her sons, Herbert J. Capell, Jr. (Sabrina) and Danny Ray Capell (Julie), both of Florence; her sister, Mildred Stokes Tyner of Florence; her grandchildren, Terry Simmons (Doug) of Darlington and Bert Capell (Crystal) of Florence, Sam Todd, Jr. of Effingham, Dana E. Capell and Bethany C. Capell, both of Florence; and her great grandchild, Christian Wesley Capell of Florence. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Martha Washington Kennedy Capers DARLINGTON - Funeral service for Mrs. Martha Washington Kennedy Capers of Darlington will be 3:30 p. m. Sunday, May 19, 2013 in Pentecostal United Apostolic Church of Christ. Bishop Fred Graham, Pastor. Burial will follow in the church cemetery directed by Mitchell-Josey Funeral Home, Inc., Darlington. Mrs. Capers died Monday, May 13th in a Florence nursing home. She was born in Darlington a daughter of the late Jake and Lillie Wallace Washington. She was educated in the Darlington County Public Schools and retired from Bethea Nursing Home after 22 years. At an early age, she joined Palmetto Baptist Church later she became a member of Pentecostal United Church of Christ serving on the Senior Choir. She was married to the late Sam Kennedy, Sr. this union six children was born of which three preceded her in death: Sam Kennedy, Jr., Deloris James and Nathaniel Kennedy. She later married the late Charlie Capers. She was preceded in death by: 4 brothers: George, Cornell, Booker T., Jake Washington; her twin sister, Mary Davis; a daughter-in-law, Sheila Kennedy; sisters-in-law: Gaynelle, Gracie and Shirley; brothers-in-law: Jesse Davis and Henry Davis. Survivors include: a son, Robert (Classie) Kennedy of Florence; 2 daughters, Rosa Lee (Harold) Dubose of Darlington and Barbara (Raleigh) Brown of Florence; 2 step-daughters, Charlie Mae Capers and Shirley Capers; one step-son, Thomas Capers; one brother, John C. "JC" Washington of Darlington; a sister, Annie C. Davis of Darlington; 22 grand-children; 50 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband; Ernest Thompson "Bud" Chandler and a son William Bruce "Bill" Chandler. Calpertia Clavon TIMMONSVILLE- Funeral service for Mother Cal-pertia Washington Clavon will be 2 PM Sunday in the Fellowship Church of God. Burial will be in Florence Memorial Gardens directed by Bacote-Eaddy Funeral Home of Timmonsville. She died Tuesday May 14, 2013. She was born in Florence County a daughter of the late Loren and Julia Brown Washington. She attended the public schools of Florence County and was employed as a Housekeeper for 25 years in Baltimore. She returned to SC in 1973 and continued to work until her retirement in 1997. She was a faithful member of the Fellowship Church of God and served in many capacities. She was married to the late Deacon Joseph Clavon, Sr. Survivors include: five daughters, Minister Naomi (Kelvin) Smith of Florence, Sister Ernestine (Dea. David) Bracey of Tim-monsville, Sister Annie (Pastor Wayne) McWhite of Florence, Mrs. Lisa (Marvin) Rush of Memphis, TN and Mrs. Beverly Clavon of Lynchburg; a son, Pastor Joseph (Cheryl) Clavon, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL; eighteen grandchildren and three great grand-children. A Wake service will be from 6 PM until 7PM today in the funeral Home. The family is receiving friends at 1217 Hibiscus Road, Timmonsville.
