HEMINGWAY John Maxcy Gregg Sr. 78, died Wednesday Feb. 22, 2006 at McLeod Regional Medical Center. John was born at Evergreen, July 8, 1930. His parents were the late R.L. (Buck) and Genevieve Purvis Gregg. He was raised in Hemingway. He was predeceased by his brother, Stephen Douglas Gregg.On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, 1951, he married Mary Lawrimore.
He is survived by four children, John Maxcy Gregg Jr. of Greenville, Ginny Lynne Gregg Alexander of Florence, Richard Bruorton Gregg of Lincolnton, N.C., and Dr. Christopher Armfield Gregg of Washington, D.C. John was known affectionately as Boomer by his three grandsons, Ryan Lawrimore Gregg of Lake City, Stuart Ransom Gregg of Lake City and Garrett Scott Alexander of Florence. He loved and was loved by McDuff, Scruffy, Shep and Blink.
John graduated from Clemson University and served with a regular Army commission in the states and in Japan. He resigned his commission and worked for Universal CIT as branch manager until an early retirement. He attended Francis Marion University where he received his Master of Education and subsequeently taught in the schools in Lee County.
His loves were history and genealogy. He published his first book, Early Pee Dee Setlers Before 1790, and his latest publication is the Descendants of Joseph Gregg. He served as president of the Three Rivers Historical Society Chronicle that was published quarterly. He organized and served as president of the Pine Bluff Cemetery Association in upper Georgetown County. He was instrumental in the construction of the new Hemingway Public Library, which houses the Three Rivers Historical Society Room.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Morris Funeral Home in Hemingway. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at the Morris Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Pine Bluff Cemetery on Old Pee Dee River Road.
