Paul Hammer Obituary

Paul Leon Hammer

Barefoot Bay, FL

Paul Leon Hammer, 94, of Great Barrington, MA, passed away Friday December 6, 2013 at his winter-time home in Barefoot Bay, FL. Paul, a native of Great Barrington, moved to Canaan, CT, where he owned and operated a plumbing business after serving in the Air Corps during WWII. He later returned to the Hammer family home in Great Barrington, where he was a familiar face, and held numerous positions, including Town Assessor.

Paul will be remembered for always being a gentleman, devoted to family and friends. He was quick to tell a joke or story and lived life to the fullest. He never met a stranger, always making new friends along his journey.

Paul was a member of the First Congregational Church in Great Barrington, and was also a member of the Elks, Moose Lodge, and Rotary Club. He was an avid golfer and won the Egremont Country Club Championship at age 57. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, and spending time with friends.

Paul was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Irene Whiting, step-daughter Maria Miller, and three brothers: Abe, Gordon, and Bob Hammer.

He is survived by his wife, Verona L. Hammer, of Brunswick, ME; son, Paul Leon Hammer, Jr. of Storrs, CT; daughter, Sharon Kay Hammer of Costa Rica; step-son: Peter Dus of Richmond, MA; step-daughter: Lois Smith of Bowdoinham, ME; three grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

A remembrance gathering will be held at the 19th Hole of the Barefoot Bay Golf Club on January 26, 2014. A service will be held in Great Barrington, MA at a later time.

I will never forget Paul. He was one of my most cherished friends -- my thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Ronnie and Paul's family - Paul helped me through some difficult times - for example: when I lost my job at Hi-G he took me golfing to talk with me and get me thinking on a positive- look forward note - always had a smile and always there to listen. He will be missed.

To Paul's family, Paul was a very nice man who always had a great garden. He was assessor when I was hired in GTB in 1994 and knew every one and every house. I am so sorry for you loss.
