Dare, Sally Guerin*
Sally Love Guerin Dare Myrtle Beach, SC  Sally Guerin Dare, 96, passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2015 in Myrtle Beach, SC. We all remain so humble, proud and blessed to be related to, and have known, Sally Dare. Many people have called and written to us to say how they had admired her and how much she had touched their lives in such positive and encouraging ways. We thank you deeply and appreciate your sharing your fond memories of Sally with us. Sally Love Guerin was born October 4, 1918 in Basking Ridge, NJ, to Florence Larter and Henry Haworth Guerin. She graduated from Columbia High School (Maplewood, NJ) in 1936 and then attended Lasell College in Auburndale, MA. She and Charles James Dare married July 1, 1939, at All Saints Episcopal Church in Millington, NJ. Prior to moving to Melbourne in 1947 Sally worked for an insurance company in NY City. Charles and Sally were active in the community and their church. They became members of First United Methodist Church (Melbourne, FL) in 1948. Sally was a scout leader and a business woman. She partnered with her sister-in-law Hilda Guerin in operating the highly regarded Guerin-Dare Kindergarten - located initially in Melbourne, and later Satellite Beach, Eau Gallie and Indialantic. Sally had many bouts with cancer in her early and later life. In the 1960's she lost many of her friends to Breast Cancer. She became a Cancer Survivor Volunteer for the American Cancer Society and for many years visited cancer patients in area hospitals and in their homes. She was ideally suited for this work, as with everything else in her life; she promoted "the glass is half full" beliefs. She was a skilled knitter and knitted many afghans and christening and baby blankets for family members and friends and also items for hospice patients through her church. Both Sally and husband Charles (1912-2001) were wonderful parents that lived by example and instilled in their son's values that are just part of their solid legacy. They were surrogate parents to many of their sons' friends who had lost one or both parents at early teen and adulthood ages. Sally lived in Melbourne over 60 years before moving to assisted living facilities in Myrtle Beach, SC in 2008. There she continued to win friends and attended bible study classes to the very end of her life. She is survived by her three sons: Charles Clinton Dare (and wife Montie) of Austin, TX, Stephen Halsey Dare (and wife Becky) of Sunset Beach, NC and Alan Scott Dare of Florence, SC. Also her sister Denise Guerin Rice of Decatur, GA. Sally also leaves to cherish her memory four grandchildren: Brian Clinton Dare (and wife Michele) of Austin, Texas; Jeffie Dare LaJoie (and husband Mark) of Fairfax, VA; Stephanie Dare Torrez (and husband Scott) of Matthews, NC, and Justin Heath Dare of Raleigh, NC. She also loved and knew well her seven great grandchildren. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, 110 East New Haven Avenue, Melbourne, FL 32901, at 11 AM, April 18, 2015. Following the service the family will have a reception for Sally's friends and family at a location TBD. Sally requested no flowers but wanted anyone who wished to make donations to consider Florida United Methodist Children's Home, 51 Main St, Enterprise, FL 32725, or Promise in Brevard, PO Box 120028, West Melbourne, FL 32912-0028.
