Lt. Colonel, Donald Lee Leonard, USAF Reserves (Ret.) 83, passed away peacefully at home early Saturday morning, November 2, 2013 with his loving family by his side.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ruby; two sons, Greg (Laurie) and Mark (Simone); daughter, Leslie Ogden; two sisters, Nancy Powell and Dorothy Ramsey; numerous nieces and nephews, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Don was predeceased by his brother, A.G. Leonard Jr.
He was born July 15th, 1930 in Salisbury, NC to the late Arthur Gregory Leonard Sr. and Maude Lee Mahaley. He graduated from Boyden High School and Catawba College. He was an active teen and belonged to the Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts and Civil Air Patrol. He enjoyed telling stories of his time at the age of 12, as the air raid warden for his street during WWII. As a means to pay his way through college he joined the NC National Guard and worked for Southern Railroad.
Don began his career in civil service at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD with the Department of the Army. While in Maryland he joined the USAF Reserves, retiring with the rank of Lt. Colonel. In 1961 he moved to Melbourne, FL working at Patrick AFB
and the Department of the Air Force, Eastern Test Range, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Emmanuel Methodist Church. He enjoyed astronomy, photography, flying model planes, scuba diving and RV'ing. He was a natural born tinkerer, friendly gregarious man who never met a stranger.
Family will greet friends from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 7th at Davis Seawinds Funeral Home with a memorial service to follow at 5 p.m.
