Ernest "Ernie" Waldinger, 86, passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 from diabetes complications at his daughters home in Satellite Beach. Ernie was born in Barmen, Germany on March 26, 1926, and came to America by ship through Ellis Island, seven months later, with his mother Erna and 4 year old sister, Ruth; settling in Guttenberg, New Jersey. There they joined his father Ernest, and the rest of the family.
At 17, Ernie joined the Marines and proudly served in Okinawa and China during WWII
. Upon returning, he met and married Rachel "Ray" McCrorie Ballantyne, and after honeymooning in Miami in the winter of 1949, convinced his family to move to Florida from upstate New York where they could build homes all year round. The family moved to Florida in 1951, and after "helping build the cape", Ernie worked as a hands-on general contractor until his retirement in the 1980's.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ray; he is survived by and will be dearly missed by his daughter, Sandy Waldinger; sister, Ruth Faggianelli; nephews, Patrick Faggianelli and Robert Marshall; nieces, Nancy Faggianelli, Barbara Cheske Campbell, Kathleen McCallum, Katrina Ballantyne Beveridge, and Alexis Ballantyne Ross; five great-nieces, and one great-nephew. Ernie will also be missed by his many friends at the Beach Side Grill, Key West Bar and the Side Pocket.
A viewing and visitation is scheduled at the Beach Funeral Home in Indian Harbour Beach Tuesday, March 12 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
