James w. Devine, 81, retired School Teacher/Coach, peacefully passed away Sunday January 13, 2013. James was born September 23, 1931 in Iron Mountain, Michigan to Frank and Margaret Smidth Devine. He received his bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University in 1955. He played both football and baseball and was the captain of the 1955 Western Michigan University football team.
He was an avid sports fan. He coached both football and baseball for both high school and junior high school. In 1993 James retired from Johnson Junior High school after 33 years of teaching. James also enjoyed both hunting in Michigan and fishing in Florida.
He is survived by his special friend Julia Teny, daughters; Denise Williams, Patrice Devine and Therese Devine; son James Devine; step-daughters Brenda Gough, Barbara Sella; four grandchildren, James Slattery, April Williams, Ashlee Williams and Alexander Hill; and three great-grandchildren and other family members.
He was preceded in death by Eunice Devine, his beloved wife of 34 years.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 on Friday, January 18 at Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am Saturday, January 19th at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church.
