Martha Gibson Sullivan
Martha Gibson Sullivan, 80, passed away peacefully and made her transition into the arms of her heavenly Father on October 30, 2012, at the Vitas Innovative Hospice Inpatient Unit in Merritt Island. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend who will be deeply missed. Martha was born on October 7, 1932, in Burlington, New Jersey, and lived most of her early life in North Carolina.
In 1952, she married the love of her life, Jim Sullivan. Martha and Jim moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where Jim worked for NASA
in the early days of the space program. In 1967, the Sullivan family moved to Titusville where Martha resided until her passing. Martha was a devoted mother to her daughters, Susan and Lisa. Martha was active in her community and her Church, and enjoyed participating in many organizations.
She was artistic and creative. She was an avid artist and painter. Her oil paintings remind us of her talent and gift and will be treasured forever. Jim and Martha also enjoyed creating custom-made teddy bears under their "Bearables" name. She loved to make custom-made quilts as well, making a teddy bear and a quilt for all of her grandchildren.
When diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1979, she had to make adjustments to her active lifestyle. But she coped with her diagnosis with strength and dignity, and learned to cope with the realities of her disease until her death. As it became difficult to use her hands for her art or sewing projects, she took up reading. Her love of books is evident to anyone that would walk into her house. She was surrounded by the books she loved and continued to enjoy reading until weeks before her death.
Martha is survived by her daughters, Susan Phillipp (Mike) of Cocoa and Lisa Dunlop of Orlando. Her loving grandchildren, Damon and Doug Wood, Anne and Phillip Dunlop, and Tanner and Chris Phillipp, also survive her. She is also survived by her brother, Bob Gibson (Jean) of Tennessee; and her sister, Pat Moery (Dick) of North Carolina, as well as many nieces, nephews and devoted friends. Martha was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim, in 2002. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Bill and Nell Gibson; her older sisters, Caroline and Jean; and her brother, Billy.
The family would like to thank her caregivers, Carla and Tracy, for the loving care they provided to Martha at the end of her life, which allowed her to remain in her home as her final wish. Thanks go as well to Ann and all of the nurses, social workers, chaplains and others from Vitas Innovative Hospice Care of Titusville. Your dedication to Martha's comfort and dignity, as well as your support to her family, will be forever appreciated.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, November 4, 2012, at North Brevard Funeral Home in Titusville. Visitation will be held one hour prior.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation in Martha's name to Vitas Innovative Hospice Care of Titusville.
We know she is at home for eternity at last with Jim and her loved ones. Martha's spirit will forever be a part of those who knew and loved her.
